Position Overview Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) is seeking a Geotechnical Laboratory Intern who is detail-oriented, motivated, and eager to learn. In this role, you will support our geotechnical, construction materials testing, and environmental teams by assisting with laboratory testing and analysis on soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and other construction materials. As a Lab Intern, you'll work in a controlled laboratory environment where you'll learn industry-standard testing procedures, operate specialized equipment, and help ensure the accuracy and quality of test results that support major infrastructure and construction projects. This internship provides valuable technical experience for students pursuing engineering, geology, construction science, or related fields. Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies and procedures. Accurately document and report test results, maintaining detailed, organized, and error-free records. Assist with sample preparation, handling, and proper storage, ensuring sample integrity, traceability, and adherence to laboratory protocols. Operate laboratory testing equipment. Follow strict safety protocols and laboratory procedures, including proper handling of materials and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Communicate effectively with lab supervisors, engineers, and field personnel, providing timely updates on test results, sample status, and any technical issues. Perform additional duties as assigned, supporting the laboratory team, field technicians, and project managers as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical coursework in engineering, geology, construction science, or a related field preferred. 0-3 years of experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical laboratory work, or a related field (prior laboratory experience preferred but not required). Commitment to workplace safety, following OSHA, company, and laboratory safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Basic computer proficiency, with experience in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and Field Data Collection (FDC) software preferred. Ability to read, write, and interpret procedures, manuals, technical documents, and reports related to construction materials testing and laboratory protocols. Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, field personnel, and clients to carry out instructions and report findings. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Detail-oriented and quality-focused, ensuring accuracy in sample preparation, testing procedures, and data documentation. Ability to work independently within the limitations of experience, using initiative to solve routine lab challenges. Ability to stand for extended periods of time and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving materials or equipment. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; ability to travel to job sites as needed. Travel Requirements ● This position does not require regular travel as part of its primary responsibilities. However, occasional travel may be required, up to 10%, primarily for occasional off-site meetings, training sessions, or company events. Moderate to loud noise levels due to lab equipment, field operations, and construction environments. Exposure to dirt, dust, chemicals, sun, heat, humidity, and varying weather conditions as part of field sample collection and testing. Physical requirements include: Ability to lift and carry between 35 and 75 lbs. over distances up to 75 feet, involving regular repetitive motion. Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate laboratory and field equipment for extended periods.     The Lab Quality Control Technician is responsible for obtaining samples of materials from the Mixing Department and testing those samples for quality parameters. Responsibilities: Operating lab equipment as necessary to ensure successful testing of quality parameters. Including but not limited thickness, color, gravity, and cure, etc. Calibrate lab equipment before the beginning of each shift. Manually record data in a correct manner to ensure accurate reports Maintain rubber with specified ranges and retest rubber that was reclaimed by Quality Control. Testing, investigating, and finding solutions to correct problems in physical properties, cure rate, gravity, color, and thickness. Maintain the many different lab processes Color master processes Cataloging Storing Cross-referencing Color Matching Samples Quality checks Maintain a safe and clean work area Other duties as assigned Essential Functions: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Ability to accurately write or otherwise record information such that it is readily useable by coworkers, customers, vendors and others; Ability to communicate with coworkers, customers, vendors and others. Detailed oriented, good with basic math and able to work in team environment required. Experience and ability to work in computer applications. Ability to work without supervision and to make appropriate decisions. Ability to process work with accuracy and to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to use a computer, including but not limited to its keyboard, touchpad, monitor and mouse. Ability to work with office equipment including but not limited to printers, rate books, copiers, calculators, and telephones. Ability to work in a stationary position in usually an office environment for an extended period of time. Physical activity includes sitting, maneuvering around out on plant floor, talking, hearing, handling, reaching, and feeling. Ability to stoop to pick up items off of the floor. Ability to reach above your head to obtain or place work related materials. Ability to periodically lift and move documents, files, file folders and other materials necessary to maintain consistent workflow. Ability to move about the office, plant and grounds as necessary to deliver and receive work related materials or to meet with coworkers, customers, vendors and others. Must dress professionally and appropriately. Ability to work in a safe manner and appropriate manner. Ability to identify color differences.
