Universal Metal company history timeline

1987

1987 → Universal Metal Products is acquired by current owner.

1990

Cyclops split the Cytemp operation into two parts in 1990; the Bridge ville operation was renamed Bridgeville Stainless & Alloy Product s, while Titusville kept the Cytemp name.

1991

A plan for Armco Inc. of Parsippany, New Jersey, to buy Cyclops for & #36;156 million collapsed in the spring of 1991.

1992

In the meantime, in January 1992, Cyclops announced that it was closi ng Bridgeville Stainless & Alloy Products after having failed to lift income or forge a new agreement with the United Steelworkers uni on (USW). According to American Metal Market, its capacity was 100,000 tons a year.

The deal w as not entirely dead, however, and the companies would be combined in April 1992. (Armco also acquired the Cytemp Specialty Steel operatio n in Titusville.)

1993

The Bridgeville plant was virtually shut down in late 1993 during a r estructuring of Armco.

1994

Unive rsal capitalized on that interest in a successful initial public offe ring on the NASDAQ in December 1994.

Universal reported a loss of $2.5 million on sales of $7.4 mi llion for 1994.

1995

Revenues were up to $47 million in 1995, with stainless steel ac counting for $38 million of sales.

1995: The Titusville plant is acquired.

1996

1996: Capital improvement is begun by rebuilding the Bridgevil le melt shop's 50-ton electric arc furnace.

1997

1997 → Hercules Stamping is acquired by Universal Metal Products to expand progressive die punch press capabilities. aka UMP, Pemberville.

Sales were up to $81 million by 1997, producing net earnings of & #36;7 million.

1998

The Bridgeville plant was ISO 9002 certified in 1998 a nd installed a new $11 million round bar finishing facility.

1999

In 1999, the third generation arrived at Universal Steel when William B “Bray” Bourne IV started as assistant project managers.

Empire had been formed from AL Tech Specialty Steel, which Universal had considered buying for &# 36;38 million before it went bankrupt in 1999.

2000

With natural gas costs escalating, in October 2000 Universal began im plementing a surcharge in October 2000.

Universal Steel, by that time, had again grown too large for its current location, and in 2000 purchased the building adjacent to the Lithonia plant.

2000 → Wickliffe facility expansion and relocation of heat treat operations to optimize material flow.

2000: The company enters the plate product markets after acqui ring a plate saw.

2001

2001 → Wickliffe facility adds (2) wire EDM machines.

2002

Losses there helped lower Universal's overall profits 72 percent to $2 million in 2002.

2002: Dunkirk Specialty Steel is acquired, greatly expanding o fferings in finished specialty steel.

2003

2003 → Appliance OEM’s step up migration from US based operations into Mexico.

Universal lost $1.4 million in 2003.

2004

2004 → UMP McAllen opens 30,000 sq. ft. facility with dedicated progressive die punch press operations.

2004 → Wickliffe facility adds (1) wire EDM machine to existing footprint.

Sales rose enormousl y in 2004, reaching $120.6 million, with net income of $7.1 m illion.

2004: Universal posts record revenues and backlog.

2005

In 2005, Russell Blocker started with Universal Steel as an assistant project manager.

2005 → McAllen facility adds (1) 400 ton press to existing footprint.

2006

Universal Steel would double its structural capacity in 2006 with the acquisition of the assets of the former Triad Steel facility in Thomasville, North Carolina.

2006 → UMP McAllen expands to 60,000 square feet.

2007

2007 → UMP Pemberville adds (2) 600 ton presses to increase tonnage capability.

2010

2010 → UMP Pemberville adds (2) additional 600 ton presses to current footprint.

2017

2017 → Wickliffe facility acquires new CNC milling equipment to help facilitate existing internal die building capabilities.

2018

2018 → CNC milling operations start at UMP Wickliffe

2019

2019 → CNC lathe capability added to UMP Wickliffe

2020

2020 → UMP certified by WBENC as Women Owned

2020 → UMP’s apprenticeship program garduates our first women journeyperson

2021

2021 → UMP celebrates 75 years of metal forming solutions
