UFCU history
UFCU company history timeline
University Federal Credit Union was chartered in 1936, and it has grown into a strong, healthy and growing financial cooperative, serving more than 250 universities, associations and employers in Central Texas and Galveston County.
In January of 1937, a group of Agriculture College Employees from the University of Kentucky developed this idea.
Freedom United FCU was chartered on October 14, 1939 by employees of the Freedom Oil Company, Freedom Pa.
University Credit Union was started by a small group of professors at the University of Utah in July 1956.
UT Federal Credit Union was established and chartered on May 15th, 1969 by a small group of University of Tennessee employees looking for a safe place to manage funds for its owners.
In January of 1987, the Credit Union name was changed to Freedom United FCU.
Callahan & Associated 2003 Credit Union Directory has declared Freedom United an industry leader in Return on Assets.
In 2004, UFCU expanded to serve anyone who lives, works, goes to school, worships, or volunteers in Salt Lake County, and immediate family members of those who qualify.
Credit unions have more than 100 years of history in the US, and in 2019 more than 5,300 federally insured credit unions nationwide served more than 117.3 million Members.
2020 2020 – Opened Southpark Meadows branch 2020 – Named Austin’s top mortgage company and credit union by the Austin Business Journal for the fifth year in a row 2020 – Opened Kyle branch 2020 – UFCU fosters the “House that Credit Unions Built” with Habitat for Humanity
