The Department of Art is looking to hire a highly motivated student to be a Ceramic Studio Technician Assistant. This position will be 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. A successful candidate will assist in the upkeep and overall operations of the wheel throwing (GHH) and hand building (FAB) ceramic studios. This is a great opportunity to learn studio/shop management skills.
Responsibilities include:
Glaze Lab Assistant
* Stock materials
* Update SDS Binders
* Mix glazes and slips as needed
* Test glaze recipes
Assist in updating Ceramic Studio Safety Guide,
* Revise equipment operation manuals
* Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures
Repair and refresh studio furniture
Assist with gas kiln firings
Clean studios as needed
To thrive in this roll, the candidate must have the following skills:
* Comfortable with operation of simple hand tools such as drills, sanders, and hammers while following appropriate safety guidelines and the use of personal protective equipment.
* Ability to lift 50 lbs.
* Demonstrates clear communication skills-both written and in person-and be able to work with a wide variety of community members including: staff, faculty and students
* Proficient in Email, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs.
* Ability to complete some of the responsibilities as outlined in this job description in a self-directed manor without close supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or is a newly enrolled student.
This position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs., a thorough understanding of daily operations of a ceramics studio, and an understanding of lab safety procedures.

This position requires astute observation skills, problem solving skills, and attention to detail. Must be able to use various control tactics and possess effective skills to de-escalate potentially violent situations and carry out appropriate arrest tactics. Must continually maintain community policing knowledge and techniques and be skilled in effective investigative and interview techniques.
Must be able to effectively communicate with people one-on-one, as well as in small group settings and when necessary to present training or safety/crime prevention workshops. Good communication skills and sound judgement are also necessary to effectively testify in court. Must also have sufficient written communication skills, to include appropriate spelling and grammar, and be able to produce effective, accurate incident and investigative reports. Incumbent must have strong computer skills to complete required documents and reports as well as input data. Must be able to create and utilize training materials such as PowerPoint slides.
Must acquire certification from the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) within one year of date of hire. Applicant must have civilian police academy diploma, high school diploma or equivalent, valid Alaska state driver's license (within 30 days of hire). Current, valid First Aid, AED, CPR certifications are required at all times to save lives and to be a first responder to emergency calls.
Special Conditions:
Shifts cover various times during the week/weekends/holidays covering a 24-hour schedule. Shifts and the schedule are determined by and set based upon departmental needs. This is a fulltime benefits eligible position. Must be available for recall to the university in emergency situations, position is considered "Tier 1 / Mission Critical" work and the department is organized along a standard law enforcement model. They must wear a uniform on duty, are subject to inspection, and are part of a formal chain of command. Must report for duty in emergency situations such as man-made or natural disasters.
Minimum Qualifications:
This position is full-time, Grade 79 or 80 -- pay grade will be dependent on and commensurate with experience and abilities.

Safety Services - Police Officer Level 2 Grade 80- Certified / Licensed Officer; State of Alaska or state with reciprocity as defined by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
Must be 21 years of age or older. Alaska certified police officers and/or prior police experience preferred but not required. For out of state police officers and/or previous law enforcement officer experience the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) requires the completion of an equivalent law enforcement academy with a minimum of 650 academy hours and a State of Alaska basic law enforcement certificate is required within one year of hire. Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Alaska driver's license (within 30 days of hire).
Applicant must be physically fit and able to perform daily job requirements of a police officer. Applicant must meet the minimum employment standards for a police officer as set the by APSC and successfully complete a physical agility test. Applicant must possess and maintain the sufficient physical conditions and sufficient mental health, as required by the Alaska Police Standards Council and determined by a medical exam and physiological examinations. Applicant must also successfully complete a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination and a drug test.

The Elizabeth J. Fallon Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers tutorial services in math and writing for all MSC students.
Math tutors are available during scheduled hours for any student enrolled in Mat-Su College courses. Tutoring is conducted face-to-face, and is available on a walk-in basis only. Math resources are also available for student use in the Learning Resource Center.
Tutor hours vary each semester and are subject to change. Hours of availability for the current semester are posted outside the LRC and on the department web site.
Tutors work with students in a variety of course work at different skill levels. Math tutors do not provide correction service for math homework; rather, they help students grasp principles of mathematics and devise strategies for using them.
To thrive in this role, candidates must demonstrate mastery in all levels of algebra, including pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra and college algebra. Preference will be given to those who also have mastery of higher levels of math such as trigonometry and calculus. Minimum Qualifications:
* At least five years of demonstrated, effective leadership and/or administrative experience in an educational, public service, or equivalent professional setting, including demonstrated experience in strategic planning, program development, policy formulation, budgeting, and fiscal management.
* Earned terminal degree (e.g., PhD, DBA) in an area as defined in the CBPP Faculty Evaluation Guidelines.
* Experience and qualifications at a level sufficient to merit the award of tenure within a discipline represented in the College, or comparable leadership in non-academic settings.

An Associate of Applied Science degree in a field related to Welding & Nondestructive Testing Technology is strongly preferred.
