UC Hastings Law company history timeline

1878

In 1878, Serranus Clinton Hastings, the first Chief Justice of California, gave $100,000 to be used to create the law school that now bears his name.

1881

Clara Shortridge Foltz (1881) – first practicing female lawyer in the United States

1882

It was impossible to reconcile these fundamentally different visions, and by September 1882, Serranus Clinton Hastings had become estranged from his own handpicked board.

1883

In deference to the 1883 act, the UC Hastings board of directors ceased to meet.

1885

On April 25, 1885, the UC Hastings board of directors convened to appoint Perrie Kewen as the new registrar, because the previous registrar had died.

1900

In 1900, UC Hastings became one of 27 charter members of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS).

1927

Sanford Diller (1927) - American real estate developer

1940

Founded in 1940, the Sixty Five Club pulled from a group of brilliant minds involuntarily retired at 65 to provide Hastings with one of the most distinguished faculties of any American law school.

1947

Andrew Downey Orrick (1947) – former Acting Chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and son of William Horsley Orrick, Sr. of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe

1949

The oldest law journal at UC Hastings is the Hastings Law Journal, which was founded in 1949.

1953

UC Hastings College of the Law, 1953 – Present Location: 198 McAllister Street

Seventy-five years of nomadic existence ended in 1953, largely through Dean Snodgrass' efforts, with the dedication of the classroom building at 198 McAllister Street, now named Snodgrass Hall.

1971

Prior to 1971, the Sixty-Five Club was the hallmark that brought the College an international reputation.

1974

Richard Thalheimer (1974) – founder and CEO of The Sharper Image

1979

Bob Hertzberg (1979) – former Speaker of the California State Assembly and Los Angeles mayoral candidate

1983

Lloyd Braun (1983) – former media executive with Yahoo!, former chairman of the American Broadcasting Company Entertainment group

1990

Amanda Grove (1990) – former Court TV anchor

In early 1990, then-Dean Frank "Tom" Read received permission from the legislature to reduce the size of the student body to approximately 1,200, while simultaneously increasing the number of regular faculty positions.

1995

Michael Huttner (1995) – progressive activist and founder of ProgressNow

1997

Inaugurated in 1997 to oversee the growing number of publications at UC Hastings, the O'Brien Center for Scholarly Publications now manages the publication of the nine UC Hastings journals.

2001

When Hastings Professor Ray Forrester died in February 2001, with him passed an era.

2011

In January 2011, UC Hastings was given a "B" in the "Best Public Interest Law Schools" listing by The National Jurist: The Magazine for Law Students.

1 Moot Court program in the country in 2011, with Top 5 rankings in each of the last five years.

2014

The “3+3 BA/JD” Program between UC Santa Cruz and UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco is set to accept its first applicants in Fall 2014.

2018

The UC Hastings Center for Business Law was established in 2018 with the mission of bringing together leading scholars, business leaders, practitioners, regulators and students to engage in the study, teaching and practice of business law at UC Hastings.

2021

In late October 2021 The New York Times published an article about S.C. Hastings' involvement in genocide against the Yuki and advocating for a name change.
