UC Merced company history timeline

2005

The campus celebrated the arrival of its first undergraduate students in September 2005.

5, 2005, as the newest campus in the University of California system and the first American research university of the 21st century.

Since 2005, our students have formed 200 clubs and organizations, written their own constitution and created a thriving governing body.

2006

The first Classroom and Office Building and the Science and Engineering Building opened in January 2006.

2009

Three years and eight months later, on May 16, 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama gave the commencement address for the university's first full graduating class.

2010

In 2010, the United States Census Bureau made UC Merced its own separate census-designated place.

2011

In 2011, the Regents appointed Georgia College & State University President Dorothy Leland to serve as the campus's third chancellor.

In 2011, UC Merced closed its Bakersfield campus in a cost-cutting effort.

2015

In January 2015, UC Merced was nationally classified with the Carnegie Classification for community engagement, along with UC Davis and UCLA.

On November 4, 2015, 18-year-old student Faisal Mohammad stabbed and injured four people with a hunting knife before being shot to death by a campus police officer.

2019

In April 2019, the school's student government cut off funding for UC Merced's only student-run newspaper.

5 “Cool School” in the nation, and the AASHE Sustainable Campus Index in 2019 ranked the university no.

2020

In 2020, 1 student received their master’s degree in history from UC Merced.

Its Triple Net Zero Commitment is expected to create zero net landfill waste and zero net greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020.
