University of Central Arkansas company history timeline

1907

The University of Central Arkansas was established as Arkansas State Normal School by the General Assembly of Arkansas in 1907, with statewide responsibility for preparing citizens to teach Arkansas children.

1908

Classes began September 21, 1908 with nine academic departments, one building on 80 acres (320,000 m), 107 students and seven faculty members.

President Doyne assigned the task of developing school colors to W.O. Wilson and Ida Waldran in 1908.

The History Department was one of the original nine departments when UCA opened as Arkansas State Normal School in 1908.

1910

Summer sessions were started in 1910.

1915

Greek life was established in 1915.

1920

UCA Mascot – It wasn't until 1920 that the UCA athletic teams had a mascot.

1922

The first diploma granted by Arkansas State Normal School was the Licentiate of Instruction, and in 1922 the first baccalaureate degrees were granted.

1925

The name of the institution was changed to Arkansas State Teachers College in 1925.

1929

Graduated 1929 from ASTC with B.S.E. and MA degree in zoology.

1930

Graduated from ASTC in 1940 with B.S. E. Degree.

1943

1945

1947

Graduated from ASTC, and was discussing student life during 1947.

BA from Henderson State; MA from U of A; 1947 came to Arkansas State Teacher’s College to teach in Biology Dept.; Main topic: Irby Administration

1948

1949

Graduated 1949 from ASTC. Student life on campus and the daughter of Doctor Minton faculty staff member of ASTC.

1950

Graduated from ASTC with BA in Music, and was discussing student life during 1950’s.

1953

Graduated from ASTC in 1953 with B.S.E. Degree and a minor in Physical Education discussing student life.

1954

A.S.T.C.; Education Major; 1954-58; Student Christian Association; “Organized Independents;” Student and Campus Life

1958

Graduated from UAPB and the wife of the first black man to graduate from A.S.T.C. in 1958.

1967

In January 1967, the name of the institution was again changed by the state legislature to the State College of Arkansas, expanding its statewide role to a multipurpose institution.

By 1967, the mission of Arkansas State Teachers College had changed.

1991

Established in 1991 by Seymour and Floyd Martin at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the Arkansas College Art History Symposium seeks to encourage and recognize student achievement in art history in the state.

1999

Victor E. Bear came about in 1999 and Victoria E. Bear came soon after.

2000

The Reynolds Performance Hall opened on September 15, 2000, with a sold-out concert by the late Ray Charles.

2002

Hardin took the reins at UCA on September 23, 2002.

2006

Bruce D. Bear became the newest addition to the UCA family in 2006

2008

President Lu Hardin announced his resignation at the August 28, 2008 Board of Trustees meeting, following controversy over a $300,000 bonus that had been voted him by the board.

On Sunday, October 26, 2008, a shooting took place on the UCA campus shortly after 9:00pm CDT, outside of Arkansas Hall, a campus residence hall.

2009

A May 2009 state Audit found several irregularities in UCA's financing including payouts to President Lu Hardin of nearly $1,000,000 after his controversial resignation.

In the 2009 Edition of United States News & World Report America's Best Colleges, UCA was ranked 54th in Master's Universities South.

2010

In January 2010, UCA mass communication students launched The Fountain (now The Fountain Magazine) , a daily source of news and information.

2011

Tom Courtway 2011– current

2012

Thomas Courtway was appointed the 10th President of UCA in 2012.
