    The Opportunity: We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to support ongoing and new projects related to direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) and water electrolyzers (alkaline/anion exchange membrane systems). The successful candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, testing, and characterization of materials and devices for clean energy conversion and storage. Responsibilities: Conduct experimental research on fuel cell and electrolyzer systems, including Electrode and catalyst synthesis. Membrane and MEA (membrane electrode assembly) fabrication, Cell assembly and performance testing (e.g., polarization curves, EIS). Design and execute experiments for materials optimization and degradation analysis. Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, including potentiostats, impedance analyzers, gas flow systems, and temperature-controlled test stations. Perform materials and surface characterization (e.g., SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, BET, Raman, FTIR). Analyze and interpret electrochemical and physicochemical data. Prepare progress reports, technical documentation, and research papers. Assist in writing proposals, manuscripts, and patents. Supervise and mentor graduate/undergraduate students. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners in academia, government, and industry. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or a related discipline. Preferred Qualifications: Hands-on experience in fuel cell and/or electrolyzer R&D, preferably PEM-based or alkaline systems. Strong background in electrocatalysis, membrane materials, or electrochemical testing. Demonstrated experience with electrochemical techniques (CV, LSV, EIS, chronoamperometry, etc.). Familiarity with nanomaterial synthesis and material characterization tools Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills. IDHI leadership and collaborating partners have extensive experience supporting the professional development of early career trainees and faculty, including skill-building in: research grant proposal development; manuscript development and publication; qualitative and quantitative research methods; behavioral intervention development, implementation, and evaluation; and career planning and advancement. In addition to being integrated with ongoing research projects, scholars will have protected time and mentorship to develop their own independent research ideas and portfolios. Research in the group involves a combination of laboratory measurements, field work, and numerical modeling, which the successful candidate will be encouraged to incorporate into their own research based on interest. The Post Doctoral Scholar will be supported by a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) funded three-year project, focusing on the design and lab-scale testing of high-temperature thermochemical reactors for solar and other renewable energy conversion and storage. The scholar will co-lead a collaborative research team with members from three universities, one clean energy start-up company, and a DOE national laboratory (Sandia) for a prototype reactor development and demonstration. The scholar will also help Dr. Li organize group meetings, co-mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and publish high-impact scientific journal articles and conference papers. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, or a very closely aligned field. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in studying fluid-solid interactions, reactive material reduction/oxidation kinetics, and high-temperature radiation transfer is highly desired. Experience in studying material reactivity at high temperature using TGA/DSC or mass spectrometer is highly desired. Experience in designing and operating thermal/fluid systems using high-temperature furnaces is desired. Experience with material characterization such as XRD, SEM, micro-CT scan etc. is desired. Expertise in experimental design and testing of high-temperature materials and energy systems such as solar receivers, chemical reactors, or heat exchangers. A team player that is able to work together with external collaborators on chemical reactor design, model validation, and reactor scale-up, and possess good oral and written communication skills.
