1973

"The University of Colorado Denver became an independent institution in 1973, after more than 60 years as an extension of CU Boulder.

1976

In 1976, MSU Denver opened a South Campus in Greenwood Village, Colorado.

1977

Among Palmer’s greatest achievements during his six years as president was his management of MSU Denver’s move to the Auraria Campus in 1977.

1978

Men’s basketball returns to MSU Denver after its disbandment in 1978.

1991

1991: The Bridge Project is founded to provide tutoring, mentoring and college scholarships to children in Denver’s public housing communities.

1994

MSU Denver established a scholarship program for the families in 1994.

1996

He took the 50-meter freestyle championship again in 1996 and ended his career named First Team All-American four times.

1997

The Richard T. Castro Distinguished Visiting Professorship was launched in 1997 with the intention of exposing students, faculty and staff to the work of Chicano and Latino artists, activists and leaders.

1999

Actor, director and author Ossie Davis gave a lecture titled “Black Creativity and the Human Experience” at MSU Denver for the 1999 Rachel B. Noel Distinguished Visiting Professorship.

2001

2001: Students hold DU's first Diversity Summit, a program started with 25 students to more than 1,000 today.

2004

Following Delgado’s death in 2004, the University instituted the annual Lalo Delgado Poetry Festival.

2005

Angelou would visit with the MSU Denver community again when she spoke on campus in 2005.

2007

As of 2007, $417,000 in displaced Aurarian scholarships had been awarded.

2010

In July 2010, MSU Denver received final approval and accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission to proceed with three planned master’s degree programs, the University’s first-ever graduate-level offerings.

Launched in 2010, the transformational campaign was created by a coalition of private companies, nonprofits and government organizations.

2011

MSU Denver’s Precision Flight Team won the Loening Trophy at the May 2011 Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON). The only other Colorado school ever to have won the 82-year-old award to that date was the Air Force Academy.

2012

Approved by the Board of Trustees in July, “A Time of Transformation: 2012-17 Strategic Plan” was a comprehensive template for the University’s next five years.

2012: DU hosts the presidential election's first debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

2013

The complex opened with eight tennis courts in August 2013.

2015

MSU Denver was ranked as Colorado’s top four-year institution and 32nd nationally in the Military Times annual “Best for Vets: Colleges 2015” issue.

2016

Faculty, staff and students across the campus have been working on various aspects of these priorities since they were first set in fall 2016.

The priorities emerged from Chancellor Horrell’s 2016 Re​ach Out and Listen Tour​, a series of collaborative forums and meetings with faculty, staff, students and community members that established a shared vision for the future of CU Denver.
