Job Description:
Provide support to faculty members in research projects involving ruminant species, primarily beef cattle, but potentially including dairy cattle, buffaloes, and small ruminants. Typical duties include:
* Plan and participate in research projects.
* Performance of various biochemical and molecular biological analyses using a variety of equipment dependent on the research objectives and experimental design established in conjunction with the faculty member, i.e, ELISA, DNA extraction, PCR (end-point and real-time), Wester blotting, Immunomicroscopy, Immunehistochemistry, and Immunofluorecence and sperm count, etc.
* Standardization of methods and develop new procedures applicable to the experimental and research protocols of laboratory users.
* Assist in grant proposal preparation, literature searches, retrieval of material, data collection, processing, basic statistical evaluation, and assistance with preparation of manuscripts.
* Assist in working with computer applications, i.e., basic word processing, graphics, slide preparation, statistical programs and data management programs, including gene expression, omics and "big-data".
* Collaborate in data and sample collection and other field activities, including but not limited to: rectal palpation and ultrasonography, collection of biological material (i.e.: blood, biopcies, cells, etc.), feeding animals, among others.
* Collaborate with faculty and fellow researchers to optimize research goals.
* Coordinates special studies or projects as directed.
Manage a Multi-Principle Investigator Laboratory
* Maintenance of laboratory equipment and laboratory physical area, including ordering supplies, equipment and inventory record keeping.
* Coordinate with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services/research.
* Maintain liaison with investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
* Acts as an advisor to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems.
* Administer and coordinate the technical activities, educational programs, and infrastructure related to the operation of laboratory.
* Perform duties as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishment of the responsibilities and functions of the laboratory area.
* Recommends, drafts and implements operating policies and procedures.
* Assist in the interpretation and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures.
* Insure that Standard Operating Procedures are developed, maintained and applied.
* Coordinate and maintain EHS standards of oversight and safety for all laboratory area, specialized scientific or hazardous materials stores.
* Ensure compliance with federal regulations for hazardous waste disposal.
* Maintain inventory and maintenance of sensitive scientific materials/instruments.
* Research and evaluate new products and equipment, compare and negotiate vendor prices.
* Prepare and monitor operating budget. Recommend purchases.
* Use purchasing card and purchase orders as per policies and regulations.
* Directs the maintenance program for laboratory equipment.

In addition, you will be part of a small, agile, interdisciplinary team that seeks to invent innovative methods that can be used in the development of diagnostics aimed at getting the right treatment to right patients and understanding the fundamental underpinnings of cancer biology. The individual will be:
* Primary responsible for the use of a new Orbitrap Ascend Tribrid LC-MS instrument for proteomic applications.
* Will manage inventory of lab consumables, including ordering, receiving, and storage of supply stocks.
* Prepare protein samples from a wide range of specimen (e.g., cells, tissues, biofluids, and SDS Page gels)

Department Specific Functions
Assist in the screening and consenting process for patients participating in clinical research studies. Review completed applications submitted by prospective participants and support the evaluation of eligibility for clinical trials. Contact potential participants to discuss inclusion and exclusion criteria, and ensure all participation requirements are met. Schedule appointments and provides participant reminders of upcoming data collection appointments and acts as liaison between participants and PI. Analyze research data, including metabolic testing results and other protocol-specific outcomes. Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Research, principal investigators, and clinical staff to coordinate Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) clinical trials, including islet transplant trials Attends all weekly and monthly required meetings with Principal Investigator (PI), research team, and reports to the director of clinical research in a timely manner. Completes study required trainings including but not limited to CITI Training, internal team training, specific study training, and collection of biospecimens Collect and process research blood samples and complete other required procedures necessary for trial participation. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is currently seeking a Transgenic and Gene Targeting - Scientist who will join the Cancer Modeling Shared Resource. This translational Facility provides qualified, cost effective and state-of-the art services to foster cancer research advancements and accelerate the discovery of tailored antitumor therapies. We are seeking a dynamic individual who would like to participate in the creation and development of new service lines in a busy and fast-paced environment, mainly focused on the generation of state-of-the-art services necessary to generate novel mouse models of cancer using advanced techniques and technologies to produce and manipulate customized genetically engineered rodents. This person will directly assist the Director in running and implementing these new genetic engineering services to support researchers in the field of functional genomics and disease modeling. The successful candidate will also participate in the planning and implementation of genome editing and transgenic projects including being responsible for the experimental design, procurement and validation of the services provided and models produced under the direction of Dr. Bilbao.
The following job description reflects additional support that this position must provide. Specific responsibilities of the position include and are not limited to:
Ensure the implementation of the transgenic and genetic engineering services. These services include the use of CRISPR/Cas9 targeting to produce gene knockouts, conditional knockouts, single-point mutations, and insertions and gene fusions, also simultaneously mutating multiple genes in a single experiment; transgenic mice generation by injecting plasmid or bacterial artificial chromosome DNA constructs into inbred and outbred mouse strains; knockout (KO) mice, conditional knockout (CKO) mice, knock-in (KI) mice generation using traditional ES cell targeting including C57BL6 ESCs; ES cell, tetraploid and iPS cell microinjection; rederivation; embryo and sperm cryopreservation; in vitro fertilization; tail biopsy and genotyping. Independently conduct research projects based on reviews of scientific literature and recent advances in related fields while contributing original/novel ideas of major methodological significance to projects, designing key experiments, and developing new techniques while ensuring the adequate integration with the rest of the services offered by the facility to provide state-of-the-art in vivo services. Advises, supports, and trains relevant personnel on technical procedures, techniques, and reagents needed generating the required SOPs to support functional genomics services. The Associate Scientist in Pancreatic Cancer Biology will play a central role in advancing a high-impact translational research program within the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Department of Surgery at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. The position to join Dr. Nagathihalli's Lab offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-impact translational research program focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying pancreatic cancer, with the overarching goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets and strategies. The research program is embedded within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that emphasizes scientific rigor, innovation, and translational potential. The successful candidate will work on integrative projects involving in vivo mouse models, tumor immunobiology, and multi-omic profiling, with particular attention to mechanisms of tumor progression, immune modulation, and therapeutic resistance in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The role involves designing and executing hypothesis-driven experiments using genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs), PDXs, Organoids, orthotopic/xenograft/metastatic systems, and advanced molecular and cellular techniques to explore discovery-to-translational programs, tumor progression, immune modulation, and treatment resistance. The successful candidate will integrate multi-omic and immunological approaches, such as single-cell transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, and tumor microenvironment profiling, and apply bioinformatic tools (e.g., R) to analyze complex datasets. Additional responsibilities include contributing to manuscript and grant preparation, engage in collaborative research projects, conduct regular lab meetings, presenting findings at scientific conferences, mentoring junior trainees, and supporting lab organization and collaborative efforts within a rigorous and innovation-driven environment.

Ensure the accurate execution of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPPA and required obligations to participants, Director, faculty, staff, and research team.
Maintains research records and invoices in accordance with established protocols and in compliance with state and federal regulations regarding privacy and security of confidential protected health information.
Conducts quality assurance of neuroimaging data and protocols

High School degree or equivalent
Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to problem solve complex technical issues.
Working knowledge and competency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Teams, Word, etc)
Ability to work in a team of engineers and technicians.
Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen.
Candidate must have or be able to obtain a SECRET level security clearance and DoD explosive certification within 1 year of hire.

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
T2 Level:
Experience in working with, the handling of and disposal of energetic materials.
Active security clearance.
Experience performing maintenance and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
T3 Level:
Experience in working with, the handling of and disposal of energetic materials.
Experience in energetic formulation.
Active security clearance.
Experience performing maintenance and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
