    Information Classification Title HVAC Mechanic III FLSA Non-Exempt FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience This position has an expert level of technical knowledge and skills for the operation and maintenance of the UGA campus building chilled water production system. This system is comprised of various sized chillers, cooling towers, chilled water and condenser water pumps, distribution piping, control valves, actuators, the systems automation control and the chiller microprocessor control, and other components. This position has an expert level of mechanical skills and technical knowledge to monitor, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the system at the district plants and at various buildings on campus. This position works independently to complete tasks within this competency. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies This position has expert level technical knowledge and skills in the operation, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of building chilled water and hot water production systems and components. The application of this expertise includes but is not limited to performing checks and taking corrective action to ensure the building chilled water production systems are delivering chilled water per the designed flow, quantity, and temperature requirements as set forth in the engineering design specifications. This expert level worker has the knowledge to independently diagnose and solve a wide range of operational issues that arise from the mechanical, electrical, and automated controls of the building chilled water and hot water production systems including the following: * Chiller and cooling tower operation, troubleshooting, and repair * Chilled water and condenser water treatment * Troubleshoot and install chiller sensors, boards and relays. * Troubleshooting, testing and assisting in the commissioning of new building chilled water production systems * Building Automation System (BAS) chilled water production control * Reading and interpreting mechanical plans and wiring diagrams * Analyzing and correcting communication issues * Analyzing and measuring fluid and air dynamics * Adherence to and the implementation of EPA refrigerant handling guidelines and be able to obtain universal refrigerant license. Physical Demands * Lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, working over head, climbing stairs, using regular and/or extended ladders throughout 8 hour work shift. * Lift up to 75 lbs during a work shift. Work will be conducted on a combination of public and private properties across 11 counties in South Georgia (centered around the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge). Free shared housing and field vehicles will be provided. Technicians will be primarily responsible for constructing, repairing, and monitoring barbed wire hair snares, beginning in early May and extending to early August. Hair snare monitoring efforts are part of a multi-year research project tasked with assessing South Georgia's black bear population abundance and genetic diversity. Primary duties will include hair snare deployment, data entry, processing of field samples, and equipment maintenance. Ideal applicants will be comfortable operating 4×4 vehicles and UTVs over challenging terrain and can comfortably navigate with a handheld GPS unit. Applicants should be comfortable carrying 30 lb. backpacks, working in challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, insects, tough topography, hazardous wildlife) in remote areas, and be able to navigate with provided field maps. Applicants must be willing to work flexible schedules. There will be opportunities for technicians to assist with bear captures given hair snare tasks have been completed. Experience hiking in remote areas, navigating small boats in shallow water, driving 4×4 vehicles, and working as a team towards a research goal is desired.
