    The Medical Laboratory Supervisor ensures the smooth, efficient operation of a clinical laboratory unit or shift. Performs clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Many of these procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals Location: North Liberty Hospital Hours: Monday-Friday 6:30-15:00 with weekend and holiday on-call rotations * Perform Laboratory processes including quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical specimens * Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed * Communicate and disseminate general information and policy or procedure changes to unit/shift personnel. * Plan prioritize and direct work activities in the designated unit/shift to ensure smooth and efficient operation. * Assist with interviewing and selecting new staff. Provide leadership for North Liberty laboratory and phlebotomy staff * Participate in the review, revision and implementation of SOPs * Investigate and resolve problems concerning patient testing and procedures. Monitor equipment performance, diagnose instrument problems/malfunctions and make repairs or initiate service requests * Provide direct supervision of assigned personnel. Participate in conducting performance appraisals and the formal progressive disciplinary process as necessary * Monitor quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing; implement corrective actions for effective testing. BASIC/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 2. 1 - 3 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required. 3. 1 - 3 years of experience with high complexity testing is required for any position that will oversee a unit which performs high complexity testing. 4. Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required. 5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. 6. Must be proficient in computer software applications. 7. Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1.     The Iowa River Landing Pathology Department is seeking a 100% Supervisor, Medical Laboratory Scientist; IRL is an offsite clinic for University of Iowa HealthCare, located in Coralville, Iowa. This role performs supervisory functions for staff within the lab at Iowa River Landing (IRL). Prepares packing list/bill of lading as required/necessary. * After consultation with/direction from a Decedent Care Specialist, and in collaboration with Safety/Security staff, releases decedents from the body hold cooler when necessary. BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY May perform all levels of testing complexity and analysis on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Utilize a variety of procedures that may involve numerous detailed tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis for all levels of testing complexity on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue and body fluids. * Provide information to health care provider regarding test methodology and interpretation. Evaluate test results and provide support to Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS). * Investigate quality assurance issues involving patient samples. * Recommend corrective action for quality assurance. * Calibrate, conduct routine maintenance and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation. * Seek technical direction from the MLS with specific instrumentation problems. * Assist in reagent comparisons, evaluate results and recommend changes to reduce costs and improve efficiency. * Participate in evaluation of equipment and recommend products for acquisition. * Maintain inventory and orders supplies as needed. * Comply with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements of the laboratory section. * Perform, record and review daily quality control associated with assigned testing. * Document and report variances. * Participate in the Quality Assurance program within the section. Identify opportunities for improvement for improvement and make recommendations for resolution of identified problems/errors. * May assist with writing and revising laboratory procedures according to NCCLS guidelines. * Assist in a positive and professional manner with bench training for the Clinical Lab Sciences Training Program within the section. * Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public SUPERVISION RECEIVED Supervision is received from Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor, Assistant Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Director, or other designated official.
