    The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a Part-time (50%) Pharmacy Technician Certified or Trainee to join our team. This position is under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of dispensing areas, also requires one on one contact with patients in their hospital room, discretionary patient room entry and collaboration with hospital unit staff. Under general supervision of technician supervisor, carries out activities supportive of development, coordination, and training of assigned areas. Provides functional supervision as required. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment. This position will work 8 hour shifts scheduled between the hours of 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, with an occasional shift ending between 8:30 pm-11:30 pm. and with rotating weekends, up to every other. This position may also support both pediatric and adult ambulatory care operations at a UI Health Care central fill pharmacy location. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment. If certification not achieved by the end of one year, individuals will be terminated. Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines. Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness. * Conduct interview with patient or patient's representative to collect and record patient profile information. * Screen prescriptions for completeness and formulary status. * Determine waiting/pick-up time and fill out patient call check. * Triage prescription to appropriate team. Recognize workflow patterns for effective triage of prescriptions. * Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures. * Utilize and maintain the ScriptPro Robot * Fill cells/cassettes * Clean cells/cassettes * Map brand changes/assign drugs to cells * Return unwanted prescriptions to cells * Daily maintenance * Fill/refill prescriptions * Read label for accuracy and correct as needed. * Label and package the correct medication. * Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatients. * Answer the dedicated prescription refill telephone line. * Generate prescription refill label. * Verify address for prescription(s) to be mailed and the date medication is needed. * Fill out call check and note pickup time or date to be mailed. * Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures. * Perform inventory maintenance activities. * Return to stock medications that have not been picked up by patients * Order supplies from Hospital Stores. * Perform daily and monthly drug inventories as requested * Generate and/or maintain (includes filing) appropriate records related to prescription dispensing such as hard copies of prescriptions, hemophiliac patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits. * Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances including: * Conduct weekly and monthly inventories * Order replacement supplies from internal source * Audit records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances * Resolve discrepancies on issuance forms * Conduct assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only) * Audit area for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration date, appropriate drug storage and references. * Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness. * Assist in on the job training of new technicians. * Coordinate technical activities with other members of team. * Complete and maintain compliance with all competencies and educational requirements. * This position may also support both pediatric and adult ambulatory care operations at a UI Health Care central fill pharmacy location. * Shifts will be scheduled to work 8-hour shifts scheduled between the hours of 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, with an occasional shift ending between 8:30 pm-11:30 pm. Utilize, AcuDose Medstations, RemStar and Med Carousel and other automated dispensing equipment. * Maintains cleanliness of BSC and other equipment and the clean room in accordance with policies and procedures. * Completes quality assurance activities and quality control records for documentation of appropriate sterile compounding processes. * Maintain competencies in proper sterile product preparation * Utilize and adhere to aseptic technique when preparing and manipulating sterile products, including proper handwashing, garbing, product handling and observance of airflow issues within the clean room facility. * Compound sterile products including anti-neoplastic drugs in bulk supplies and single doses; utilize aseptic technique in BSC. * Maintain proper handling and proper worker safety precautions regarding medications that are considered hazardous (antineoplastic medications) or medications that become hazardous upon waste (EPA designated waste). * Package and compound non-sterile products in bulk supplies and single doses. * Conducts and documents monthly inspections of patient care areas * Assist with on-the-job training of pharmacy students and new technicians; may provide functional supervisor to student technicians * Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances including daily, weekly and monthly inventories; order replacement supplies from internal source and review documentation records for completeness and contact manager if documentation is not complete. * Perform tasks associated with refilling AcuDose Medstations including following proper procedures in picking correct medications to restock AcuDose Medstations, following proper procedures in restocking AcuDose Medstations * Assisting pharmacist in conducting inspection of all medications stored on patient care unit. Under general supervision of the Technician Supervisor carries out activities associated with training and coordination of technician activities. Assists with directing daily workflow for both technicians and students. Position Responsibilities: Coordinates daily technical functions for assigned work areas. * Provides supervision to Pharmacy Technicians and Student Pharmacy Technicians. * Reassigns work areas and duties for technicians based on workload. * Coordinates procurement of equipment, inventory, labels or other supplies as needed. * Works on-line performing all required technician duties as needed. * Assists with interviewing, orienting, training, scheduling and providing work performance feedback. * Assists with interviewing applicants. * Assists the supervisor with coordination of training new staff including documentation of training. * Conducts training and provides remedial training as needed. * Assists in preparing work schedules for Pharmacy Technicians and Student Pharmacy Technicians. * Participates in administering competency assessments. * Completes aseptic technique training of new staff assigned to this area. * Maintains twice yearly PATT2 and fingertip sampling and yearly hazardous competencies of all staff assigned to area. * Provides performance feedback for both newly hired and existing staff (technicians, students, pharmacists, residents, and externship students). The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire at either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee classification, or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. (Forms 127P, 131) * Utilize various equipment including, laminar flow hoods, computerized label printers, pharmaceutical packaging and compounding equipment and pneumatic tube system. Utilize, AcuDose Medstations, RemStar and Med Carousel and other automated dispensing equipment. * Maintains cleanliness of BSC and other equipment and the clean room in accordance with policies and procedures. * Completes quality assurance activities and quality control records for documentation of appropriate sterile compounding processes. * Maintain competencies in proper sterile product preparation * Utilize and adhere to aseptic technique when preparing and manipulating sterile products, including proper handwashing, garbing, product handling and observance of airflow issues within the clean room facility. * Compound sterile products including anti-neoplastic drugs in bulk supplies and single doses; utilize aseptic technique in BSC. * Maintain proper handling and proper worker safety precautions regarding medications that are considered hazardous (antineoplastic medications) or medications that become hazardous upon waste (EPA designated waste). * Package and compound non-sterile products in bulk supplies and single doses. * Conducts and documents monthly inspections of patient care areas * Assist with on-the-job training of pharmacy students and new technicians; may provide functional supervisor to student technicians * Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances including daily, weekly and monthly inventories; order replacement supplies from internal source and review documentation records for completeness and contact manager if documentation is not complete. * Perform tasks associated with refilling AcuDose Medstations including following proper procedures in picking correct medications to restock AcuDose Medstations, following proper procedures in restocking AcuDose Medstations * Assisting pharmacist in conducting inspection of all medications stored on patient care unit.
