Assists in the care of patients by providing routine, non-professional nursing care utilizing advanced medical and surgical skills typically beyond the Nursing Assistant level. Takes patients' vital signs, observes and communicates changes in patient conditions. Requires CNA certification.
Principal Duties:
Provides safe, effective and efficient patientcare as directed by assigned licensed nurse.
a. Assists with obtaining basic patient information as part of the nursing history or ongoing assessment and reports abnormal values to the appropriate nurse.
b. Orients patients to the care environment to promote patient comfort and safety.
c. Observes and reports obvious physical and emotional patient changes to assigned nurse.
d. Monitors patients for special risks and reports observations to assigned nurse (i.e., falls, skin breakdown).
e. Makes regular patient visits to provide all patients with quick response to their needs.
f. Seeks guidance and direction in prioritizing multiple demands to effectively meet patient's needs.
g. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in the assigned work area. Recognizes normal/abnormal vital sign parameters depending on age of patient.
.h Documents completely and accurately according to the unit and division standards, including safety measures.i. Remains calm and effective in emergency situations and follows appropriate guidelines.
j. Performs and completes all assigned skills and duties as outlined care plans, critical pathways, competencies, skills lists, standards, policies and procedures.
k. Demonstrates manual dexterity abilities to perform precise skills required to meet patientcare needs.
l. Demonstrates the ability to operate and maneuver patientcare equipment safely.
m. Initiates equipment to ensure patient safety (bed alarm, side rails, trapeze, and restraints).
n. Demonstrates the ability to use proper body mechanics to safely transfer and move patients.
o. Practices infection control procedures and observes Standard Precautions (including appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment).
p. Demonstrates knowledge of role in emergency situations (Code 99, Code Red, Code 13, Code D).
q. Maintains area of responsibility in neat and orderly condition. (Patient rooms are neat and uncluttered, etc.)
r. Stocks and returns equipment and supplies to proper storage area.
s. Reports broken and unsafe equipment to appropriate personnel and/or Department Manager.

Qualifications
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Licensure/Certification/Registration
Required: Current Maryland certification in good standing as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
Alternative training: Completion of first clinical year of NLN-approved nursing program, graduate of an approved RN or LPN program, or EMT-B or Armed Forces Corpsman.
Required: Certification in Pre-Transport/Post-resuscitation Stabilization Care of Sick Infants Guidelines for Neonatal Healthcare Providers (STABLE) is required of staff assigned to 672 - Nursing NICU, 651-Nursing (Post-Partum), Nursing 708 - Labor & Delivery

Job Description
General Summary
Under the direction of professional nursing staff, provides direct patientcare. Takes vital signs, checks surgical dressings, aids patient's with activities of daily living. This role performs blood draws and collects specimen samples. Observes and collects data and communicates about the patient's status in order to identify needs and provides needed care. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary patientcare services team.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the person assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Performs testing and manages the care of the patient based on results achieved and clinical findings.
Records patientcare along the continuum, including activities of daily living (ADLs): feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting and transferring.
Completes, documents and reports patient vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation and reported pain level).
Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
Participates in cost effective strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
Promotes patient safety including fall prevention. Ensures the safety of the clinical environment for patients, visitors, and other staff members.
Maintains order and appearance of patient rooms and work area. Maintains patientcare supplies and linen.
Provides post-mortem care.
Collaborates with members of the health care team to carry out the plan of care, including reporting observed changes in patients' condition.
Ensure patient comfort relative to their pain status.
Measures and documents patient urinary and stool output. Documents calorie count. Measures and documents patient weight.
Assists with indwelling urinary catheter care. Applies, maintains and removes external urinary catheter devices. Performs bladder scans, measures post void residuals and documents. Inserts both intermittent and indwelling catheters, documenting volume output.
Conducts blood glucose monitoring.
Performs venipuncture for drawing blood samples and established IV access.
Performs nasal swabs.
Gathers equipment required and initiates placement IV for the patient as directed by the registered nurse.
Sets up and operates multiple lead EKG machines; attaches and removes EKG leads; runs a rhythm strip.
Assists with enteral tube feedings via nasogastric or gastrostomy tubes, as supervised by licensed nurse.
Performs chest physical/physio therapy, tracheal suctioning, tracheostomy care and incentive spirometry treatments as delegated and supervised by the responsible registered nurse
Assists with simple dressing changes, such as routine dressings to stage one and two wounds, surgical incisions, and peripheral IV sites after assessment by a Registered Nurse. Provides wound care to promote healing and maintain structural integrity of the skin. Performs skin care and hygiene and reports impaired skin integrity and/or wound impairment. Assists with appropriate strategies and/or treatment measures to provide wound care.
Assists with collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing. Incorporates proper techniques for patient identification, method for collection of appropriate specimen(s) and documentation.
Provides orthopedic/rehab device care: e.g. braces, splints, CPM. Dons/doffs compression wraps/stockings.
Precepts and mentors PCT Is, and other PCT IIs, managing completion of documentation.
Participates in hourly patient rounding in collaboration with the health care team.
Responds to patient triggered alarms, including call light, chair alarm, bed alarm, tele-sitter alarm, etc.
Complies with the The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals within scope of practice.
Detects, reports, and acts to avoid or correct safety risks. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
Provides professional vigilance to assigned patients, including when assigned as a patient safety companion.
Incorporates safe lifting techniques and body mechanics in daily practice.
Improves patient flow and prevents care delays.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Current Maryland state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) required.
One (1) year of previous experience preferred.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Able to effectively communicate using verbal and written skills.
Maintain interpersonal relationships and use teamwork skills to provide care along with other team members in a cohesive manner.
Ability to organize work priorities, perform several duties simultaneously and function in stressful situations.
Ability to learn and use computer systems

UNIT SUMMARY: Northwest Hospital's main operating room (Main OR) provides innovative surgical services on both inpatient and outpatients. The main surgical suite consists of a new exquisite pre- and post-operative area, five operating rooms, one Cysto suite and a new endoscopy suite. The main operating room cares for approximately 480 surgical patients a month. Patients of surgical services may require care following general or orthopedic, neurologic, urologic, gynecologic, thoracic, vascular, podiatric, cosmetic procedures. Surgical service employees provide excellent care to their patients and follow Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nursing Practice (ASPAN) standards of care. Surgical staff must utilize strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status, implement clinical nursing interventions to modify symptoms.
JOB SUMMARY: As a member of the surgical team, provides technical assistance to the surgeon/physician during surgical intervention under the supervision of the RN within the Surgical Services department. General Summary
