The Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (9C) offers inpatient diagnostic evaluations and comprehensive treatment plans to patients with serious psychiatric disorders.
Treatment planning includes recommendations for appropriate psychotherapeutic, psychosocial and psychopharmacological (medication) treatments, with vocational treatments following discharge. We emphasize coordinating these recommendations with ongoing or subsequent psychiatric management. Patients also may be invited to participate in a variety of approved diagnostic and treatment research programs.
We are actively engaged in research in the areas of schizophrenia, psycho-immunology and affective disorders.

Survival Flight transports complicated ICU and Emergency patients to advanced levels of care, implementing evidence-based practice interventions. The purpose of the Survival Flight Initial Training Curriculum is to prepare the proficient emergency / critical care nurse for clinical practice as a Survival Flight Nurse at Michigan Medicine. This program is intended to transform a practicing skilled and experienced critical care bedside nurse into a transport nurse that meets and exceeds the practice standards of Survival Flight and Michigan Medicine. This is a rigorous and extensive orientation which requires personal motivation and dedication as a self-directed learner. Outstanding interpersonal skills as evidenced by peer feedback, annual evaluations and demonstrated during the interview process.
Training and education of the Survival Flight Nurse will include but is not limited to the ten Core Training Modules: Introduction to the Transport Environment, Safety and Operations, Basic and Advanced Airway Management, Emergency and Trauma Care, Ventilator Management of the Critically Ill Child and Adult, Pediatric Critical Care, Neonatal Critical Care, High Risk Obstetrics and Introductory Radiology and Diagnostics. Clinical education will also include Survival Flight Third-rider experience, focused-ICU, or other ICU patient care areas (based on employee needs), Clinical Skills Lab, and scenarios, discussion forums, and Competency-Based Education. The entry-level flight nurse will be required to obtain Paramedic training and Michigan Licensure during the initial orientation training period, and no later than twelve (12) months following orientation start date.
The CCRN or CFRN is required at time of hire. Successful completion of both is required within 24 months of hire.
The Initial orientation Training Period will be between nine (9) and twelve (12) months, depending on specific needs and progress. This individual will be considered a Survival Flight employee for the duration of their training. Shift assignment will occur after successful completion of the initial orientation. Successful completion of the orientation requires meeting the behaviors of the Professional Framework (RSAM) for a Flight Nurse at the Competent Level and successful completion and licensure as a Paramedic in the State of Michigan.

The UM Adult ED is a Level 1 Trauma Center with 87 beds, capable of cardiac monitoring, and includes 5 resuscitation bays. The Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3), is a section of the Adult Emergency Department, that offers specialized care for the severely ill or injured adult emergency patient. This Center has 15 critical care beds available for those patients needing critical care. Our Registered Nurses care for patients who present with a variety of injuries or ailments, ranging from minor to life-threatening. Nursing staff will receive the specialized training necessary to care for patients within the specific areas of our department, for example triage and resuscitation. Documentation occurs for all patients in an electronic medical record. The University of Michigan Health is a Magnet recognized hospital. * Provide the delivery of culturally sensitive, age-specific team-based care models in delivering nursing care for Primary Care patients including adult medicine, pediatric, Palliative Care, and OB/GYN patient populations.

To provide safe and effective nursing care as assigned to patients in each of the 7 Adult Intensive Care Units. This includes caring for patients in the Trauma Burn, Neuro-Surgical, Cardiovascular Surgery, Surgical, Medical, and Cardiac Intensive care unit, and Intermediate care units.
This will include caring for patients with multiple types of illnesses and disease processes that require both physiologic monitoring and intensive nursing care. These patients often require ventilation support, hemodynamic monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, and fluid and electrolyte corrections, parenteral or enteral nutrition and use of multiple cardiac agents and vaso-pressive drips. Staff must actively participate as a member of the healthcare team in each of these critical care units. The Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the University of Michigan is a 59 bed Level IV neonatal center serving our region, state and beyond. We remain one of the state's leading referral centers for premature newborns and infants with complex medical problems, complex surgical problems or unusual anomalies, need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and whole body or selective head cooling for hypothermic neuroprotection.
About 80% of the Newborn ICU admissions are inborn and 20% are transported from our referral region and state. We offer 24/7 neonatal transport services with Newborn ICU RNs as members of the transport team.
Our specialized nursing team members provide quality nursing care to newborns from the acute phase of illness through recovery. A family-centered approach to care is practiced in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
We provide individualized support and education to families during hospitalization and in preparation for discharge. We empower families to participate in decision making for and in the care of their child.

The unit is multi-acuity ranging from critically ill to short stay observation. Multidisciplinary care is provided for children from newborn to young adult in partnership with Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, BMT, Nephrology, Transplant Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiology.
State of the art technology including ECMO, Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Ventilation, and CRRT are used in the care of patients in the PICU. Family centered care including family presence during physician rounds, nursing report, and parent spending the night with their child is supported and encouraged. The PICU participates in a nationwide collaborative to improve quality of care and outcomes.

Responsibilities*
Pediatric Critical Care Nursing is a specialty within nursing that deals specifically with human responses to life-threatening problems. Critically ill patients are defined as those patients who are at high risk for actual or potential life-threatening health problems. These patients are often highly vulnerable, unstable and complex, thereby requiring intense, rapid response and vigilant nursing care. The PICU nurse must be able to monitor and safeguard the quality of care that the patient receives.
The PICU critical care nurse is responsible for ensuring that all critically ill patients and their families receive optimal care. PICU nurses care for patients that require complex assessments, high-intensity therapies and interventions, and continuous nursing vigilance in a highly stressful environment. The PICU nurse must be able to cue into subtle changes in the patient's status that may require multi-level assessment and intervention to prevent deterioration into life threatening situations. The PICU nurse must be able to anticipate the child's needs and be sensitive to the child's nonverbal communication.
In addition, the PICU nurse must be able to assess the patient and the family's coping mechanisms and provide/seek support as needed. The PICU nurse has a responsibility to serve as the patient's advocate and act as a liaison between the patient, patient's family and other healthcare professionals including Social Work and Child Life.
