Job Summary:
To provide direct and indirect patient care duties which have been mastered in his/her course of study under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor while enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.
Education & Experience
Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing school program within the United States preparing candidates for registered nursing licensure and have successfully completed one (1) academic year or two (2) clinical semesters of clinical courses in nursing; must be in good standing in the school of nursing and agree to comply with Mississippi student nurse externship program guidelines. Must be enrolled in externship course at nursing school program during time of externship. . BSN student preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to comply with Mississippi student nurse externship program guidelines. Ability to comply with safety, environmental, and infection control standards and practices. Ability to work in a team environment.
Responsibilities
* Assists with initial and ongoing assessments; develops an understanding of collecting, reporting, and documenting data related to patient care activities.
* Assists with treatments and other delegated tasks under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
* Provides hygiene and comfort measures to patient such as feeding, drinking, ambulating, grooming, toileting, dressing, and socializing.
* Contributes to the assessment of patients, their needs, and plan of care under direct supervision of a registered nurse. Develops the ability to prioritize and organize patient care.
* Practices the principles of maintains a safe patient care environment; complies with safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
* Performs as an integral component of the health care team. Participates in unit meetings and continuing education programs.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking.
