University of Montana company history timeline

1893

Missoula won the legislative vote for the new university in February 1893 at the third Montana Legislative assembly.

Founded in 1893, the university is the flagship campus of the four-campus University of Montana System and is its largest institution.

1895

By 1895, the university officially opened with classes held at nearby Willard School until campus buildings could be constructed.

Instruction began in 1895.

The first set of buildings were set up around the Oval in 1895.

1897

1897: The School of Mines Building (Main Hall) becomes the first building constructed on campus.

1900

1900: Montana Tech opens its doors as the Montana State School of Mines.

1902

Rankin graduated from the University of Montana in 1902.

1916

In 1916 she was elected to the United States House of Representatives, thus becoming the first woman to hold a seat in either chamber.

1919: A bill enacted by the Legislative Assembly of Montana in 1919 created the Montana State Bureau of Mines and Metallurgy.

Running on an antiwar platform in 1940, Rankin once again won election to the House.

1941

She created a furor as the only legislator to vote against the declaration of war on Japan after the raid on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941), effectively terminating her political career with this vote.

1943

1943: Montana School of Mines becomes a Naval College and offers the V-12 program, which guarantees an officer replacement program for the Navy and Marines during World War II.

1944

1962: Lighting of the “M” on Big Butte.

1965

1965: The Montana School of Mines becomes the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology.

1965: Montana Tech opens Alumni Coliseum, which was first intended to be used for football games and American Legion baseball games.

1968

On January 15, 1968, at the age of 87, she led 5,000 women, calling themselves the “Jeannette Rankin Brigade,” to the foot of Capitol Hill to demonstrate opposition to the hostilities in Indochina.

1994

1994: The Montana University System is restructured, and Montana Tech becomes affiliated with the University of Montana, becoming Montana Tech of the University of Montana.

2011

2011: Chancellor Frank Gilmore retires after 13 years at Montana Tech.

Blackketter served in the leadership position since 2011.

2012

2012: Montana Tech’s two-year campus is renamed Highlands College of Montana Tech.

2014

2014: The Materials Science Ph.D. Program’s first students begin studying at Montana Tech.

2015

2015: Montana Tech breaks ground for the newest building on campus, the Natural Resources Research Center (NRRC). The NRRC will provide laboratory space for natural resources and energy undergraduate and graduate education and research on campus.

2016

2016: The Natural Resource Research Center (NRRC) opens on the campus of Montana Tech.

2018

2018: At their May 2018 meeting, the Montana Board of Regents unanimously approved Montana Tech's formal name change request.

2019

2019: Montana Tech’s 11th chancellor, Doctor Donald M. Blackketter, retired from the university in June 2019.

2020
