University of Nebraska Foundation company history timeline

1936

The University of Nebraska Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization created in 1936 by community leaders who wanted to create excellence at the university not possible through state funding alone.

1937

In 1937, the foundation’s first bequest came from the estate of former university faculty member, David R. Major, in the amount of $325.

1943

In 1943, Perry W. Branch was hired as the first full-time employee, and the first office opened in the student union on the UNL campus.

1947

Two years after the formal dedication of Love Library in 1947, another landmark was dedicated near the center of campus—the Mueller Carillon Tower.

1968

Since the University became part of the Nebraska System in 1968, there has been a flurry of growth.

1977

The first formal campaign was launched in 1977, with a $25 million goal.

1987

In 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial collapsed 20 percent in a single day, prompting a serious look at the foundation’s investment policies and asset allocations.

1992

In 1992, Kearney State College joined the University of Nebraska system.

2008

Terry Fairfield retired as the foundation’s longest-serving CEO in 2008.

2012

Brian F. Hastings joined the foundation as president and CEO in 2012.

Construction began in 2012 on UNO's new 60,000-square-foot Community Engagement Center, which will support and allow for further expansion of university-community partnerships.

2017

A two-year initiative focused on broad support for students concluded in 2017 with $217 million given for scholarships, academic programs and student facilities.

2018

An affiliation formed in 2018 with Nebraska Medicine enabled the foundation to manage development for the health network, which serves as UNMC’s clinical and research hospital partner.
