Located in the heart of a growing, vibrant city since 1908
Since its inception in 1908, the University of Nebraska Omaha has been firmly anchored in the community, forging partnerships with business, education, government, arts, and civic organizations.
The original Omaha University was founded in 1908 in the Kountze Place neighborhood of North Omaha.
The first decade of the 20th century saw enrollment at NU increase by a third, and by 1909 nearly 4,000 students were in attendance.
Put to the vote of the people in 1915, the proposal was defeated, and work was begun anew for expansion on both campuses.
Jacobs Gymnasium was built for the University in 1916.
City campus, on the other hand, developed in a variety of styles, experiencing rapid growth in the postwar years of the 1920s.
In 1927, businessmen formed the North Omaha Activities Association in order to redevelop Saratoga School’s playing field into a football field for the University’s football team.

By 1930, Omaha voters approved taking over control of the University of Omaha—making it the city's first and only municipal university.
Instead of building the magnificent campus though, in 1931 the Omaha University president proposed to abandon North Omaha.
In 1937, a new college president bought a dairy farm on West Dodge Road, and with the help of the Works Progress Administration and other federal and state assistance, the next year the university moved away from North Omaha forever.
In 1937, Joslyn Hall became known as the University Apartments.
In 1938, UO leased the Jacobs Gym to the City of Omaha, which used funds from the Works Progress Administration to operate it as a community center.
Two years after the formal dedication of Love Library in 1947, another landmark was dedicated near the center of campus—the Mueller Carillon Tower.
With new bleachers built to accommodate a crowd of one thousand, the Saratoga Field was home to OU's football team until 1951.
In 1952 the national Silver Wings student organization was founded at the University of Omaha.

By 1964, both the former Jacobs and Joslyn Halls were the last two original OU buildings left.
Since the University became part of the Nebraska System in 1968, there has been a flurry of growth.
In 1976 the Doctor C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Library replaced the Eppley Library.
The renovated facility will opened to students in the fall 2011 semester.
Construction began in 2012 on UNO's new 60,000-square-foot Community Engagement Center, which will support and allow for further expansion of university-community partnerships.
