University of North Carolina company history timeline

1811

Today, Davie is recognized as the “Father of the University.” ; he received the institution’s first honorary degree in 1811.

1875

With the help of Kemp P. Battle who later became North Carolina State Treasurer and President of UNC in the nineteenth century, the university opened its doors once again in 1875.

1890

In 1890, Sallie Walker Stockard was awarded with a masters degree in history and became the first woman to graduate from UNC.

1891

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was established by legislative enactment on February 18, 1891.

1892

The school opened on October 5, 1892; there were 223 students by the end of the academic year and a faculty of 15.

1919

UNC Kenan-Flagler launched its Undergraduate Business Program in 1919.

1936

Furthermore, the UNC School of Public Health was chartered in 1936 giving the school the preeminence of five health profession sectors: nursing, medicine, pharmacy, public health, and dentistry.

1942

The university added more and more facilities including, the School of Government in 1942, becoming the first school of public policy in the United States.

1958

1971

In October of 1971, the North Carolina General Assembly adopted legislation which combined all 16 of the state-supported institutions of higher education into a single University of North Carolina.

1995

Doctor Debra W. Stewart, Dean of the Graduate School at North Carolina State University was named Interim Chancellor until Doctor Patricia A. Sullivan became UNCG's first woman chancellor in January 1995.

2012

According to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, as of February 2012, UNC was ranked first among the 100 best United States public colleges that offer students high quality academics at an affordable price.

2013

Since opening in 2013, Launch has supported 153 companies that have generated nearly $69 million dollars in revenue and raised $38.4 million in total funding.
