Project Abstract:
Project Abstract: Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is native to the eastern United States, where this attractive tree has been a popular choice for landscaping. But out in the Great Plains, Red Cedar is known as the "green glacier", because this slow-growing species is taking over once-productive grasslands. Ranchers face substantial economic costs in removing Red Cedar from grazing lands, and it reduces grassland biodiversity through competition with native species. But how do you stop a "green glacier"? Populations might be expanding because environmental variability has altered frost and drought regimes, or because humans have implemented prairie management practices such as fire suppression, or even because of changes in the migration patterns of seed-dispersing birds. It is more likely, however, that many factors are at work. For example, environmental variability might allow plants to move into a new region, but seed dispersal by birds could promote population expansion within a region. Rather than focus on one factor, this study will determine the relative importance of several causal factors. Data from experiments will be used in a model that predicts the rate and locations where Red Cedar range expansion is likely to occur. Findings will be presented to the public at the Holden Arboretum Scientist Lecture Series and incorporated into Holden Arboretum's "Working with Nature" K-12 Camp and "Tree Corp" adult workforce development program.
Uncovering scale-dependent mechanisms controlling range and niche expansion of plants is a key issue in biodiversity research. This work integrates physiological and ecological processes across scales to determine the potential for further range expansion. The central hypothesis is that, at a large spatial scale, changes in prairie management are more important than physiological climate tolerance for promoting range expansion, while at smaller scales, biotic factors such as avian dispersal, competition and facilitation are more important. The spatial scale of variation will be determined using microsatellites in historical, encroaching and niche expanding populations. The effects of fire will be examined using long-term data from the Konza Prairie NSF-LTER, while manipulative and field experiments will determine how the interaction of frost and drought impact Red Cedar performance. Seed dispersal by birds and changes in bird migration over time will be examined to determine how far, and where, birds disseminate Red Cedar. Empirical data will be integrated into a spatially explicit population-level age/stage matrix model, based on inputs from structural equation modeling at all three spatial scales, with spatial resolution determined by the results of microsatellite studies.

Job Description:
The Department of Environmental Sciences, at the University of Toledo, OH seeks a postdoctoral research associate to study the methane cycling in coastal ecosystems under different flooding regime. A particular focus lies on separating microbial pathways that contribute to methane fluxes using stable isotopes of carbon and hydrogen. Furthermore, possibilities exist to participate in an ecosystem-scale freshwater flooding experiment as well as improve model representation of methane cycling. Experience and interest in using stable isotopes and/or measuring fluxes along the soil/water-plant-atmosphere continuum is welcome. The anticipated start date for the position is October 1, 2025.
Hydrological intensification will lead to changes in inundation and drainage patterns within coastal ecosystems. In the Great Lakes region, lake levels vary on different timescales but are predicted to rise in the next decades. A new ecosystem-scale manipulation in a diked upland forest system in collaboration with the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge will address ecological and biogeochemical responses to increased flood duration and depth. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help develop and lead this experiment. Depending on interest, the incumbent will also have the opportunity to collect and/or synthesize data from established transects covering wetland, transitional and upland areas where data collection is on-going.
This position is part of the DOE funded project - Coastal Observation, Mechanism, and Predictions Across Systems and Scales - Field Measurements and Experiments (COMPASS-FME). This large project is led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in collaboration with multiple partners, including the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and Argonne National Lab. The COMPASS - FME project aims to understand the coupled interactions of plants, microbes, soils/sediments, and hydrology within coastal systems to inform multi- scale, integrated models from reaction scales to the coastal interface. The project's research emphasis is primarily on terrestrial and wetland processes that are influenced by coastal waters, such as the fluxes and transformations of carbon, nutrients, and redox elements through these systems. This project includes several national labs, and research institutions in the W. Basin of Lake Erie and Chesapeake Bay, affording the successful candidate the opportunity for exciting and diverse collaborations. There will be opportunities for close collaboration with project partners and scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and The University of Toledo.
This postdoc will be based at U. Toledo and will develop sampling strategies and lead data collection and analysis aimed at understanding coastal ecosystem biogeochemical response to hydrological changes. The candidate will also be responsible for data curation in preparation of uploading to scientific databases and work with the COMPASS research team to assist with data review and archiving.

Autonomy Researcher
University of Dayton, Ohio 4.6
Dayton, OH jobs
UDRI is a national leader in scientific and engineering research, serving government, industry and nonprofit customers. UDRI contributes to the fulfillment of the University's commitments to education, research and public service through the involvement of students, faculty and external partners. Join our team today as an Autonomy Researcher!
Verification of autonomy is known to be a hard problem. Autonomous systems include complex decision-making mechanisms that are likely to be sensitive to changing mission conditions, resulting in a “state space explosion” of possible system behaviors that traditional test-based approaches cannot adequately cover. To address this problem, “formal methods” - i.e., mathematically-based tools and techniques for design, specification, and verification - can supplement testing by providing evidence of system correctness through proof and analysis. Formal methods, in conjunction with existing best practices for system and software development, can also be used to make autonomy software more robust and reliable by checking for general properties such as absence of runtime errors, memory leaks, access to undefined memory locations, etc.
Using OpenUxAS, an autonomy framework developed by AFRL, one of our goals is to make it easier for our collaborators, e.g. academic or industrial partners who are using it as a platform to build or test autonomous or human-automation systems, to use OpenUxAS in their own work. However, our larger goal is to use OpenUxAS as a case study and demonstration of best practices for software development, documentation, and verification using formal methods alongside more traditional approaches. To date, we have been working to formalize requirements and verify individual services in UxAS (Aiello, et al. 2019), which we plan to continue. We are also working to restructure UxAS to better enable traditional approaches like unit testing. We are also working to develop better documentation for UxAS, including user guides and developer guides, and we are developing additional tutorial examples for UxAS and associated simulation framework OpenAMASE (AFRL/RQ 2020). We are also working with collaborators who are developing verified algorithms for OpenUxAS, e.g. path planning algorithms. Since OpenUxAS is implemented as a service-oriented architecture, we also plan to develop methods to compositionally verify that collections of services satisfy higher-level system properties. We are also interested in developing a multi-vehicle air collision avoidance algorithm using NASA DAIDALUS (NASA 2020) as a foundation, incorporating it into OpenUxAS, and demonstrating it in OpenAMASE.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field;
2. Familiarity with modern Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and software compilers such as Netbeans, Visual Studio, Eclipse, or similar;
3. 3+ years of demonstrated, successful experience developing software using C, C++ or Java;
4. Ability to apply technical concepts discussed in academic papers or journals;
5. Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications:
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
1. Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
2. Demonstrated, successful experience (academic or professional) programming in algorithm level languages such as Matlab/Simulink, Python or similar
3. Demonstrated, successful experience (academic or professional) developing software to 4. Demonstrated, successful experience (academic or professional) installing, configuring, and working in Windows and Linux environments
5. Demonstrated, successful experience (academic or professional) developing software applications specifically designed for use in multi platform (e.g. Windows and Linux) environments
6. Demonstrated, successful experience (academic or professional) with source code version control systems such as Git, Subversion, or similar
7. Demonstrated, successful experience (academic or professional) with software development practices such as Agile, Scrum, or similar
8. Demonstrated, effective interpersonal skills
9. Active US SECRET (or higher) clearance
Special Instructions to Applicants:
To apply please submit a cover letter addressing each minimum qualification and any applicable preferred qualifications that you meet.
Closing Statement:
Informed by its Catholic and Marianist mission, the University is committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Informed by this commitment, we seek to increase diversity, achieve equitable outcomes, and model inclusion across our campus community. As an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Employer, we will not discriminate against minorities, women, protected veterans, individuals with disabilities, or on the basis of age, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.
