1866

In 1866, an orphanage for children affected by the Civil War was established in Cedar Falls.

1869

The school's first building opened in 1869 and was known as Central Hall.

1909

Because of this “challenge”, in 1909, UNI’s name was changed to the Iowa State Teachers College.

1965

In 1965, a fire destroyed Central Hall, and school faculty and Cedar Falls citizens donated over $5,000 to start building Gilchrist Hall.

1992

Critics generally panned the book, but it struck a note with many readers (among them Oprah Winfrey), and it became a best seller in 1992, remaining at or close to the top of the list for a year and staying on The New York Times best-seller list for three years.

1993

Waller’s second novel, Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend (1993), was also a best seller.
