In 1866, an orphanage for children affected by the Civil War was established in Cedar Falls.
The school's first building opened in 1869 and was known as Central Hall.
Because of this “challenge”, in 1909, UNI’s name was changed to the Iowa State Teachers College.
In 1965, a fire destroyed Central Hall, and school faculty and Cedar Falls citizens donated over $5,000 to start building Gilchrist Hall.
Critics generally panned the book, but it struck a note with many readers (among them Oprah Winfrey), and it became a best seller in 1992, remaining at or close to the top of the list for a year and staying on The New York Times best-seller list for three years.
Waller’s second novel, Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend (1993), was also a best seller.
