University of Saint Joseph company history timeline
They obtained from the Connecticut State Legislature a charter granting power to confer degrees and, in 1932, began a junior college for women at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, West Hartford.
In 1932, the Sisters of Mercy of Connecticut set out to establish the first college for women in the Hartford area.
Mercy Hall (1936) The second of the original campus buildings is named in honor of the founding Sisters of Mercy.
In 1943, an evening college was founded.
It was in 1948 that Saint Joseph’s acquired several spacious homes adjacent to the campus, which were converted to its first student residences.
Rosary and McAuley Halls (Student Residences, 1955) These first residence halls set the pattern of clustering dormitories on the west side of campus.
Using a $120 grant from the student government, he had the costume created and made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69-56 win over La Salle at the Palestra, one of the most storied gymnasiums in collegiate athletics.
Assumption Hall (Student Residence, 1962) As more students wanted to live on campus, Assumption Hall was built.
McGovern Hall (Student Union, 1962) McGovern houses the dining hall, student lounge, bookstore and student affairs offices.
The Gengras Center (1965) As advisor and trustee, E. Clayton Gengras had a long association with the College.
In 1968 the Jesuit superior general, Father Pedro Arrupe, refocused the order with “a preferential option for the poor,” and the Jesuit ranks experienced a rise in the popularity of liberation theology, which holds that ministry should include involvement in the political struggle of the poor.
Soon after expanding its curriculum to include child development classes, St Joseph’s opens one of the East Coast’s first laboratory preschools. It later is renamed the Dillon Child Study Center in 1968.
In the fall of 1970, the College opened its doors to women as full-time students, bringing an end to its tradition as an all-male institution.
St Joseph’s Long Island campus opens in Patchogue, absorbing what had been an extension program in Brentwood since 1971.
The corporate charter was formally changed to reflect University status on December 27, 1978.
The center was built in 1985 as the sales office for The McAuley, a retirement community immediately to the east.
In 1997, the College of Business and Administration was renamed Erivan K. Haub School of Business.
Originally housed in the lower level of Mercy Hall, the School for Young Children moved in 1999 to the former Beach Park School near campus.
Lynch Hall (2000) Helen Lynch ‘41 was a high school business teacher for many years.
North and South Residence Halls (2008) The newest residence halls were opened in fall 2008.
The 2008 acquisition of the adjacent 38-acre Episcopal Academy in Merion began Saint Joseph’s largest expansion since the move to City Avenue.
The new Villiger Hall, a 400-bed residence hall that opened its doors to first-year students in August 2012, graces the corner of Cardinal and City Avenues.
Since that date, it has expanded both its facilities and enrollment, until in 2012, a name change was necessary to encompass the advanced programs and degrees offered.
In 2012, Saint Joseph’s acquired the former Cardinal’s Residence from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
In 2013 Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina became Pope Francis, the first Jesuit to be elected pope.
In 2014, the University conferred its first doctoral degrees to graduates of the new School of Pharmacy.

In 2015, Saint Joseph’s announced the election of Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., as its 28th president.
In November 2016, the University of Saint Joseph began its comprehensive research and review of becoming a coeducational institution.

In November 2016, the University of Saint Joseph began its comprehensive research and review of becoming a coeducational institution. Based on this review, the university began admitting male students to all full-time undergraduate programs in the fall of 2018.
In 2018, the Barnes Foundation launched a historic educational partnership with Saint Joseph’s, expanding opportunities for both students and the surrounding community to engage in the horticulture education program and fine arts programming.
In the Fall of 2019, the University opened its first new school in 30 years, the School of Health Studies and Education.

Saint Joseph's University merged with University of the Sciences in 2022, offering robust health and science programs and an expanded University City campus.
