USC Aiken company history timeline

1961

Three full-time faculty members, a secretary, and 139 students joined for the university’s first academic semester in September 1961.

Building partnerships has been the cornerstone of the University of South Carolina Aiken since its inception in 1961.

1968

The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968.

1972

The university purchased property from the Graniteville Company and moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972.

1975

The Gregg-Graniteville Library was completed in 1975.

1977

After an extended planning period, which resulted in preliminary accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the USC School of Medicine Columbia matriculated its first class in February 1977.

In 1977, the university was fully accredited as a senior college by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges, now known as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and granted its first baccalaureate degrees.

1981

The charter class graduated in May 1981, at which time the school achieved full LCME accreditation.

1983

GHS began offering elective rotations for fourth-year medical students from the USC School of Medicine Columbia in 1983.

1989

In the summer of 1989 the dreams of three individuals merged and began to take shape.

From its modest beginnings in 1989, the Academy evolved into a multi-faceted program that provided hundreds of area adults with a wide range of fun and educational opportunities.

1990

Doctor Kauffman served as Director of the Academy until his death, shortly after the beginning of the Academy’s initial Fall term, on October 19, 1990, having successfully established the Academy that was to continue his dream.

1991

Citing a common interest in healthcare education and the acknowledgment of the robust clinical activity at GHS, USC and GHS partnered to create a regional clinical teaching campus of the USC School of Medicine in Greenville in 1991.

1993

By 1993 interest in the Academy had grown rapidly and there were requests to lower the age at which people might join.

1994

Master’s degree programs began being offered on campus in 1994.

1997

In 1997, the Board of Regents removed the numerical limit and formalized “mature adult” as the age requirement for membership.

1999

The first classes were held in August 1999.

2009

The findings of that study, presented to leadership in August 2009, included the following: 1) The medical school expansion is consistent with the mission statements and goals of the respective institutions.

In the spring of 2009, USC and GHS authorized a feasibility study to examine the creation of a four-year medical program in Greenville.

2010

USC School of Medicine Greenville applied for Applicant School status with the LCME in January 2010.

Its faculty generated $212 million in funding for research, outreach, and training programs in fiscal year 2010

2011

The national accrediting body for medical schools (the Liaison Committee on Medical Education) granted preliminary accreditation in October 2011, which qualified the school to begin receiving applications through the American Medical College Application Service.

2014

In 2014, the local organization, which had grown to about 70 volunteers and assumed more of the manual writing previously provided by SeniorNet, decided that it was time to leave SeniorNet.

2015

The new organization offered its first classes in January 2015.

The USC School of Medicine Greenville received full accreditation from LCME in the fall of 2015.

2016

On March 18, 2016, the charter class celebrated a 100 percent residency placement rate during the school’s inaugural Match Day ceremony, and in May, the Class of 2016 became the first to graduate from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.

2021

The Center for Lifelong Learning was formed in 2021 by the merger of the Academy for Lifelong Learning and the McGrath Computer Learning Center.

2022
