SUMMARY:
The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 24 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university's largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.
The Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies is the central forum for the study of Islam and Islamicate societies at Stanford University. It supports interdisciplinary research and scholarship on Muslim-majority societies, Muslim minority communities, and related cultural, historical, and political formations. The Program hosts lectures and conferences that advance scholarship in the field and supports undergraduate and graduate student research and language study through grants and internships. It serves as the central hub for affiliated faculty across University departments and units whose research falls within the Program's thematic and regional foci. The Program also offers an Islamic Studies specialization within the Global Studies minor and coordinates and promotes coursework related to Islam and Muslims across the University. Through public lectures, artistic performances, exhibitions, and online resources, it also serves as a resource for public education on Islam and Muslim communities.
