A ResearchAssociate position is available immediately in the Saito laboratory to study hepatic cell biology, hepatic inflammation, and innate antiviral immunology. Our laboratory utilizes the state-of-the-art humanized liver chimeric mouse model in addition to the tools of cell biology, virology, genetics, molecular biology and systems biology. The ideal applicant will be a hardworking, creative and highly self-motivated researcher who is interested in the field of liver disease (e.g. metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis, liver inflammation, and hepatic immunity). The candidate is expected to have significant experience with in vitro and vivo experiments, including but not limited to primary cell isolation/culture, general molecular biology, biochemistry, in vivo study skills. This includes, but not limited to, protein assay (Western Blotting, Immunoprecipiatation, gel analysis), nucleic acids (DNA and RNA such as cloning, PCR, RT-QPCR, RNA synthesis, transfection, extraction), microscopic analysis (immune fluorescent staining, Immuno-histochemistry (IHC), light microscopy and image analysis and processing).
The ideal applicant will be a hardworking, creative, and highly self-motivated researcher interested in pathogen-host interaction, liver diseases, inflammation, and immunity. The candidate is expected to have significant experience in molecular biology, in vitro and in vivo experiments (mouse), biochemistry, protein assay (Western Blotting, Immunoprecipitation, gel analysis), nucleic acids (DNA and RNA such as cloning, PCR, RT-QPCR, RNA synthesis, transfection, extraction, gene overexpression/silencing), and microscopic analysis (immune fluorescent staining, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), light microscopy and image analysis and processing).
The ResearchAssociate's primary responsibilities will be to develop, lead, and conduct highly technical research projects under the PI's guidance. It includes identifying the research question, design, and perform experiments, as well as the analysis of research data and provides interpretations. The applicant is expected to serve as a lead author for publication and conference presentation. The candidate must be fluent in the use of laboratory equipment, computer/research/office software to conduct analyses of experiment data. The candidate also contributes to the quality control of the laboratory, such as preparation of general experimental materials, maintenance of laboratory protocols, safety guidelines, and animal protocols. **POSITION SUMMARY**
Reporting to the Deputy Director for the John Gardner Center, the Quantitative ResearchAssociate collaborate with Gardner Center staff and community partners to design and carry out rigorous, actionable, and capacity building research that responds to the partner's needs and enables them to make research-informed decisions that advance their efforts to improve the lives of youth, families, and communities.
**CORE DUTIES:**
+ Develop and carry out research designs that utilize the most robust quantitative methods possible given project parameters (e.g., timeline, budget). This includes collecting, securing, cleaning, verifying, documenting, coding, and analyzing data using a variety of methods.
+ Ensure quantitative and qualitative dimensions of a study are seamlessly integrated from initial design through final reporting.
+ Meet with partners on an ongoing basis to review research activities, interim findings, and evolving analyses.
+ Communicate research findings to a variety of interested, invested, and impacted parties, including academic and community audiences. This may include writing and presenting interim research updates, non-technical research summaries, and peer-reviewed studies for leading peer-reviewed journals.
+ Participate actively as a collaborative member of the Gardner Center team, contributing to a vibrant, generative community dedicated to community engaged scholarship in the service of ensuring the wellbeing of our most vulnerable youth, families, and communities. Dr. Estakhri's research interests focus on two main themes: (1) investigating new phenomena and their physical dynamics in the scattering of classical and quantum fields from complex disordered structures and their significance in the realm of quantum optics; as well as (2) new and timely topics in the area of quantum information science which includes proposing and testing quantum control protocols and techniques for solid-state quantum processors particularly quantum dot spin-based structures. The ResearchAssociate will conduct independent research in the areas of quantum optics and quantum information science. The research will include: Performing analytical modeling and numerical simulations on complex disordered nanophotonic structures, Investigating new phenomena and their physical dynamics in the scattering of classical and quantum fields from complex disordered structures and their significance in the realm of quantum optics, Analyzing collected data from numerical simulations and experimental measurements, Devising and implementing appropriate measurement techniques (if applicable), Working on quantum control techniques and gate designs (includes programming) for spin-based quantum processors for quantum computing, Publishing results in scientific journals and presenting results at national and/or international conferences, Working alongside principal investigator to mentor undergraduate and graduate student researchers. The Engreitz Laboatory is located in the Biomedical Innovations Building on the main campus at Stanford University and is a member of the BASE Initiative in the Betty Irene Moore Children's Heart Center.
Project overview: DNA regulatory elements in the human genome, which harbor thousands of genetic risk variants for common and rare heart diseases and could reveal targets for therapeutics that aim to precisely tune cellular functions - if only we could map the complex regulatory wiring that connects 2 million regulatory elements with 21,000 genes, and genes with thousands of pathways across the diverse cell types in the human body. We have recently developed new approaches that could enable mapping this regulatory wiring at massive scale (see Fulco et al. Science 2016, Fulco et al. Nat Genet 2019, Nasser et al. Nature 2021, Gschwind et al. bio Rxiv 2023), and applied these and other approaches to understand the genetic basis of complex diseases (e.g., Schnitzler et al. Nature 2024). We aim to expand these studies to systematically map the functions of variants, enhancers, and genes in many cell types from the heart and vasculature. These studies will ultimately help to uncover biological mechanisms of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, and other heart diseases to help to guide diagnosis and therapeutic development. **Required Qualifications:**
Ph.D. in virology, cell or molecular biology, or biochemistry plus at least 2 years of postdoctoral training that includes prior experience with molecular virology of gammaherpesviruses or retroviruses, including molecular biology and reverse genetics; replication and reactivation assays; cell line generation and optimization. Knowledge of EBV biology and EBV-associated cancers or HIV virology is essential, as is the ability to manage your own research and contribute ideas for new directions and funding opportunities. Ability to identify and pilot the appropriate approaches to answer experimental questions/problems and to independently design experiments to advance projects are required. Excellent quantitative and communication skills and ability to collaborate are essential.
