I'm Allison Marcum, MSN, MBA, RN, NE-BC and the current Nurse Manager of the Orthopedic Trauma unit located on 9 East. Our patient population ranges from teenagers to geriatrics who have experienced a traumatic injury. These injuries can be orthopedic related or not. We most often see patients who have been involved in motor vehicle crashes, ATV accidents, motorcycle accidents, traumatic amputations of an extremity, brain injuries, falls, and osteomyelitis. We work closely with physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, and case management. At times, our patients have very complex discharge plans and require collaboration with physicians, primary nurses, the team leader, case manager, and nurse manager. "Teamwork makes the dream work" and is an expectation of all team members. Nursing Technicians and RNs rely heavily on each other to complete daily tasks for our 30-bed unit. It is very fast-paced environment as well as fun and exciting. Every patient is a new chance to learn something new! The ratios on our unit are 1 RN to 5-6 patients, along with NTs and Health Unit Coordinators. We provide a targeted twelve weeks of orientation, with eleven of those being on the unit with a preceptor. Our preceptor program is designed to pair each orientee with a preceptor that has the same learning style as them, i.e. tactile, auditory, or visual. Are you wondering what your next steps will be? Professional Development and career growth are very important on 9 East. Completion of orientation on the unit along with the Nurse Residency program will be your goals for year one.
