The selected candidate will contribute to the department's mission to strive to improve the quality of health care through excellence in the education of students, physicians, and the public; the advancement of biomedical knowledge through discovery, integration, and translation to the clinical setting; and the provision of comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible patient care. Position Key Accountabilities: The faculty responsibilities in the Division of Infectious Diseases will be primarily inpatient infectious diseases consultation service and outpatient infectious diseases clinics at our affiliated hospitals; teaching medical students, internal medicine residents, and/or infectious diseases fellows. The position will concentrate on general ID, but will have exposure to transplant and surgical infectious diseases services, as well. There is potential for clinical or basic research for the position, depending on qualifications and experience. Developing and sustaining an environment in the patient care units that support excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating programs, and standards that support positive patient care outcomes to include excellent risk-adjusted outcomes. Providing coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to clinical managers, attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, and clinical staff. Serving as a role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and interpersonal skills. Delegating authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, organizational policies, and procedures. Identifying patient and family needs of the populations served; recommending and/or developing new programs and services to meet those needs; assuring that age-specific equipment, supplies and educational resources are available for assigned units/services. Collaborating with UTHealth Houston and hospital administration and physicians to identify future opportunities, and define the direction of department services; developing, and implementing plans to achieve identified goals, including productivity and patient throughput targets across the care continuum. Maintaining an ongoing departmental Quality Improvement Plan and process consistent with the organizational Quality Management Plan; developing and implementing unit-specific standards, policies, and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services; continuously assessing and improving assigned departments' performance while enhancing service. Participating in and/or chairing committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate. Assuring interdisciplinary performance improvement programs are active, maintained, and ongoing. Following up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled. Collaborating to maintain a focus on providing excellent clinical services. Maintaining professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-services, current literature, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in fields of expertise; supporting and promoting education and research. Supervising a highly specialized clinical team of direct care providers and administrative staff. Position Key Accountabilities: 1. Under the direction and supervision of an anesthesiologist, the Anesthesia Assistant administers the prescribed anesthetic to patients in order to desensitize them to permit the performance of medical or surgical procedures. 2. Obtains an extensive pre-anesthetic patient health history and performs pre-anesthetic physical examinations. After consultation with the anesthesiologist, the AA may order pre-op evaluations and pre-medications. 3. Establish multi-parameter monitoring prior to anesthesia or in other acute care settings. Modalities include, but are not limited to, ASA Standard Monitors, arterial and venous catheters; may manipulate and interpret data from central venous, pulmonary artery, intracranial catheters and other monitors or devices. 4. Performs initial CPR/ACLS in emergency situations until the supervising anesthesiologist is summoned. 5. Utilizes advanced treatment modalities to effect Section 6, including but not limited to advanced airway interventions and intubation of the trachea; starting and adjusting doses of vasoactive infusions; administering vasoactive and anesthetic drugs; administering blood; and any other treatment modalities prescribed by the supervising anesthesiologist. 6. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a community-focused clinical division in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Under the leadership of nationally recognized Professor and Chair Mary Aitken, MD, MPH, FAAP, and in alignment with the Department of Pediatrics' broader strategic plans, the incoming chief will be responsible for creating and implementing the vision and goals for the Division and leading and mentoring esteemed faculty and next generation of clinicians. Affiliated with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, the Division is comprised of 12 gastroenterologists - 9 academic staff and 3 full-time, clinic-based physicians - and 6 fellows who evaluate and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders in our clinics, hospitals, and endoscopy laboratories. In a typical year, the Pedi GI Team completes more than 8,000 visits across 6 clinics and about 700 admissions across 4 hospitals. The Division has active programs in inflammatory bowel disease; specialized clinics in liver disease and children with high risk; an aerodigestive program; and a growing program on celiac and colorectal diseases. The Pediatric Gastroenterology Division is currently #29 in the US News and World Report Top Children's Hospitals, ranked ahead of many more populated programs, and is expanding outreach clinics across the growing pediatric population in Greater Houston. There is strong institutional support to continue this growth and develop additional areas, including advanced endoscopy and motility programs. Position Summary: Provides technical assistance in carrying out assigned duties of research projects. Position Key Accountabilities: * Prepares, conducts, records, and analyzes various tests in a clinical and/or diagnostic laboratory setting involved in research. * Collects appropriate patient history data. Research subjects may range from traumatically injured central nervous system and burn patients, patients with respiratory disorders, and rheumatology patients. * Collects human and animal blood and urine specimens and conducts various tests involving chemical and carcinogenic agents, animal psychophysics, retinal histology, and various tissue cultures. Collection techniques includes data collection, assays, cell passaging, arterial punctures, obtaining blood samples, and performing rheumatologic tests. * Processes blood and urine specimens to obtain tests results. * Performs tests using a centrifuge, UV light microscope with fluorescent attachment, autoclave machine, and pipet washer equipment. * Cleans and sterilizes all glassware, instruments, and pipets. * Orders and stocks laboratory with supplies. * Obtains and photocopies reference materials. * Maintains a safe laboratory environment and follows safety procedures. * Performs other duties as assigned.
