University of the Cumberlands company history timeline

1888

The college was incorporated by the Kentucky state legislature on April 6, 1888.

In 1888, a group of Baptist Ministers founded a small college in Kentucky known as the Williamsburg Institute, for the purpose of preparing young adults for lives as servant leaders.

1889

University of the Cumberlands, first called Williamsburg Institute, was founded on January 7, 1889.

1892

In 1892, Cumberland moved to its present location.

1913

In 1913, following the acquisition of Highland College, Cumberland College was born.

1918

Although founded as a senior college, in 1918 Cumberland College officially became a junior college.

1931

The college received its first accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1931.

1956

In 1956, the Board of Trust secured an amendment to the Charter, changed the institution to a private, independent corporation, and reopened the College of Arts and Sciences as a two-year junior college, known as Cumberland College of Tennessee.

In 1956 the Board of Trustees began bringing the college back to senior college status.

1964

SACS granted initial accreditation to the institution as a senior college in December 1964.

1982

The Board of Trust expanded the academic programs of the Junior College in 1982, returned Cumberland to a four-year, degree-granting institution, and resumed the name Cumberland University.

1988

Cumberland College received authority to award its first graduate degree, the Master of Arts in education (MAED) on April 6, 1988.

2005

On July 1, 2005, after action by the Board of Trustees, Cumberland College became the University of the Cumberlands.

2006

In 2006, the Kentucky state budget included $10 million of state debt to construct a pharmacy building on the university's Whitley County campus.

2007

In 2007, the pro-Gay and Lesbian rights group Soulforce brought its 2007 Equality Ride to Cumberlands' campus.

2008

More recently in 2008, the commission also authorized the granting of the MBA degree, the Ed.S. degree, as well as the institution's first doctoral degree, an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership.

2014

The board of trustees officially approved the succession plan on October 15, 2014, giving Cockrum a seven-year contract and the title of Chief Executive Officer & President-Elect.

2015

The board of trustees, in a unanimous vote, officially named Cockrum university president on October 15, 2015.

2017

The university is authorized by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to operate as a nonprofit corporation with perpetual duration and is licensed by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) to grant the degrees currently offered through July 2017.
