Shai Reshef established the University of People in 2009.
UoPeople doesn’t exist in a vacuum, but rather, it’s a community of educational leaders across the globe who have come together with the same goal in mind: to empower students from all backgrounds to achieve their higher education goals. For example, in 2011, NYU signed on as a university partner, offering students from UoPeople to transfer credits and receive full scholarships to attend NYU Abu Dhabi.
In February 2012, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the University of the People a grant of $613,282 for the purposes of helping the university earn national accreditation.
Launched in September 2013, the UoPeople Microsoft4Afrika scholarship program will support a total of 1,000 African students to graduate with a world-class academic degree from UoPeople in either Computer Science or Business Administration.
UoPeople operates on a very lean budget ($1.2 Million in 2013, with expected growth to $1.8 in the coming years). It is able to offer tuition-free education because of its use of Open Education Resources, open source technology and by utilizing professional volunteers.
Furthermore, in 2013, President Reshef was invited to the White House to share how this educational model could be scalable and revolutionize education to change the world.
Ted Talk: With over 6 million views, in 2014, President Reshef was invited to give a Ted Talk where he shared the mission to grant education to anyone seeking it.
The fees UoPeople charges, paid either directly by the student or through a scholarship, ensure that the University has a stream of revenue which will make it sustainable upon reaching 5,000 students, a milestone expected in 2016.
In 2016, the university began offering an online MBA.
In 2017, the Ford Foundation granted support for the initiative, and in 2017, Pope Francis also shared his support.
