University of Vermont history

The citizens of Burlington helped fund the university's first edifice, and, when it was destroyed by fire in 1824, also paid for its replacement.

David Abiram Howe, son of George and Abigail Howe, was born in West Almond, Allegany County, New York, on July 26, 1848.

A public library in Wellsville had its earliest origins in 1856.

In 1867 when an amateur theatrical club put on a series of plays, additional funds for the library were raised.

He married Nancy A. Reaser of Wellsville in 1870.

In 1871, UVM defied custom and admitted two women as students.

In 1877, UVM became the first to admit African Americans to its chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society.

In 1893, a group of thirteen women interested in literature formed a group called the Monday Club.

Use it to locate citations to books on Medieval history, literature, art, and culture. It includes information about journal articles, books, and book chapters, published worldwide from 1900 to the present.

On July 26, 1910, the library (which is now the municipal building) opened to the public with a collection of over 9,000 books.

In 1924, the first radio broadcast in Vermont occurred from the college station, WCAX, run by students then, now the call sign of a commercial television station.

The David A. Howe Public Library was dedicated on May 13, 1937.

After the largest individual gift in the history of the University of Vermont, the UVM school of business has been renamed in honor of the donor, Steven Grossman, a 1961 graduate and a long-time supporter of the school.

For 73 years, until 1969, UVM held an annual "Kake Walk” where students wore blackface.

In 2001, the library posted its first web site and became available over the Internet, allowing broader community access to the catalog, local information, and databases of health, news and business resources.

The first was the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, named in 2003 in honor of Steven ’61 and Beverly Rubenstein of New Vernon, N.J., whose $15 million gift brought UVM into the national spotlight of environmental and natural resource programs.

Since 2010, he has been a trustee of the Grossman Family Foundation of Cos Cob, Conn., a charitable organization.

Applications to the Grossman School are up sharply in recent years, with 955 undergraduate students now enrolled – an increase of nearly 40 percent since 2011.

On January 1, 2012, the staff of UVM’s former Division of Development and Alumni Relations woke up and reported to work as employees of the University of Vermont Foundation.
