Position Summary The primary purpose of this position is to develop and construct advanced particle detectors to be used in nuclear and particle physics experiments conducted at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). These experiments are aimed at understanding the structure of sub-nucleonic particles. Responsibilities The responsibilities of this laboratory specialist include assisting in the design and fabrication of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, testing and characterization of these detectors, and installation of these detectors in Jefferson Lab, the laboratory specialist will also be required to participate in the running of experiments at Jefferson lab and the analysis of data from the experiments Minimum Qualifications * Education: Bachelor's degree required, may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree. * Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required. * Licensure/Certifications: None Preferred Qualifications * Education: Bachelor's degree in Physics * Education: Master's degree in physics, physics instrumentation of a related field * Experience: Extensive experience in the construction and testing of GEM detectors * Experience: Constructing lab spaces for GEM detector construction. * Experience: Constructing assembly fixtures for GEM detector construction * Licensure/Certifications: Physical Demands This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. The Le lab investigates how genetic and microenvironmental factors interplay to regulate tumorigenesis. Our research focuses on identification of the cell of origin and elucidating the role of tumor microenvironment in cancer development. We dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis from a developmental perspective using Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a common tumor predisposition human genetic disorder, as a model. While working on neurofibromatosis, our research group serendipitously uncovered the identity of follicular epithelial cells that directly give rise to hair and mechanisms that cause hair to turn gray - findings that led to our second focus to identify possible treatments for balding and hair graying associated with aging. The practice of interventional radiography (cardiology and vascular) is performed by EP Lab Tech II/radiologic technologists responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. An interventional technologist performs radiographic and other procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Interventional Radiography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information and/or therapeutic outcomes. An interventional technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure. An interventional technologist must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Interventional technologists must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique. They must possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety. Interventional technologists are the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners and other members of the support team. Interventional technologists must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills. The Ribic NeuroLab uses in vivo electrophysiology, 2-photon imaging, viral and anatomical tools to study mechanisms that guide development and remodeling of cortical circuitry. The Ribic NeuroLab offers a collaborative environment, with a strong focus on hands-on laboratory training and mentorship. The successful candidate will work directly with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Adema Ribic, and collaborate with other laboratory scientists. Besides implementation of neuroscientific experiments, the position entails the management of the animal colony, as well as laboratory inventory, data and supplies. As the funding for this position is available for 5 years, with a likelihood of extension, this is a great opportunity for recent BA/BS or MSc graduates that are considering a career in scientific research and are looking for a position that facilitates career growth.
