The Le lab investigates how genetic and microenvironmental factors interplay to regulate tumorigenesis. Our research focuses on identification of the cell of origin and elucidating the role of tumor microenvironment in cancer development. We dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis from a developmental perspective using Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a common tumor predisposition human genetic disorder, as a model. While working on neurofibromatosis, our research group serendipitously uncovered the identity of follicular epithelial cells that directly give rise to hair and mechanisms that cause hair to turn gray - findings that led to our second focus to identify possible treatments for balding and hair graying associated with aging. The Research in Education and Learning (REAL) Lab is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support ongoing projects related to learning and motivation in educational contexts. Research Assistants will contribute to a range of tasks, including data collection, transcription, coding, data processing, and preliminary data analysis. Extensive training will be provided, and the ideal candidate will bring strong organizational skills and attention to detail, excellent communication, collaborative attitude, and a willingness to learn. This position will be a primarily remote position, with occasional in-person meetings in Ridley or Bavaro Hall . The role will take place during the Spring 2026 semester, with the opportunity to continue beyond that term dependent on performance and lab need. We are seeking highly motivated students to assist with animal husbandry and lab maintenance in the Fins and Limbs Lab, under the supervision of Dr. Sandy Kawano in the Department of Biology. Our lab studies the functional morphology and comparative biomechanics of animal locomotion, with an emphasis on fish and salamanders. Student workers must pay special attention to safety, animal welfare, detail in record keeping, and time management. Strong communication skills are a must, with the ability to communicate problems to the supervisor and other lab members. This position provides an opportunity to learn about comparative anatomy and physiology, and gain transferable skills for the workforce (e.g., data entry, literature review, problem solving, effective communication, time management). Work hours are flexible but may require some availability on weekends and university breaks. The student will perform basic laboratory duties such as maintaining clean and safe workspaces, care for and monitor the health of research animals, conducting inventory of lab supplies, maintaining or updating lab records and protocols, and performing other related duties as needed. Candidates who demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory duties may have the opportunity to join specific projects being completed in the lab, assist with data collection and analysis, participate in fieldwork, and assist or train other students. Responsibilities * Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed, and cell culturing. * Tasks will include abdominal suturing during animal surgeries (this can be taught), monitoring mice after survival surgery, administering medications through intraperitoneal injection (this can be taught), taking care of the breeder colonies, genotyping of genetic editing of mice and following protocol as laid out by the institution, and refilling water/food. * Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. * Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. The Neural Circuit Assembly & Plasticity Laboratory (Ribic NeuroLab) led by Dr. Adema Ribic at the University of Virginia is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented and meticulous Laboratory and Research Tech. The Ribic NeuroLab uses in vivo electrophysiology, 2-photon imaging, viral and anatomical tools to study mechanisms that guide development and remodeling of cortical circuitry. The Ribic NeuroLab offers a collaborative environment, with a strong focus on hands-on laboratory training and mentorship.
