    Scribes shadow resident physicians and attending physicians and completes all documentation tasks through real time, on-site medical transcription. Also responsible for ensuring thoroughness of medical documentation, coordination and integration of medical tests/labs/imaging for ready access of the physicians. + Shadows physicians during patient encounters and ensures that medical documentation is complete according to all appropriate guidelines. Takes notes on patients and completes the medical chart. + Performs random chart reviews for quality assurance medical documentation purposes. + Keeps chart deficiencies to less than 5%. + Assists the physician with communicating their patient care plans with other physicians, nurses and patient care technicians. + Ensures patient care flow has optimal efficiency to keep patient care at a high quality and the efficiency of patient flow maximized. This will be monitored by physician semi-annual reviews. + Provides timely submission and retrieval of tests on behalf of the physician. + Performs other tasks as assigned.     The Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) seeks to hire Medical Scribes for the 2026-2027 academic year. Scribes are essential members of our healthcare team and work directly with patients under the supervision of licensed medical staff. This position is ideal for students pursuing health careers who are taking a gap year between undergraduate and graduate education. This is a wage position, with an expectation of 40 hours per week during the academic year and an anticipated start date of early August 2026. Please note that there is an annual 1500-hour limit for this position and all other wage assignments at UVA also count toward the 1500-hour limit. Medical Scribes provide clinical assistance to SHW staff and faculty by performing on-site medical transcription. They work directly with patients to obtain patient data and specimens as required by protocols. They enter data into project and medical record databases and assist with documentation. They may accompany physicians on patient encounters to record accurate medical information including notes of communication, past medical records, laboratory results, etc. Specific Responsibilities may include: * Scribe for patient visits for a variety of health concerns, including primary care, travel, and dermatology. * Perform phlebotomy and other laboratory services under the direction of the laboratory supervisor. * Obtain patient specimens, including nasal specimens from patients with suspected COVID. * Prepare charts for specified visits, such as travel and dermatology. * Utilize equipment to perform point of care testing * Assist in quality improvement projects * Assist in public health events, such as mass vaccination events * Other duties as assigned This is a wage position which is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work in a year.
