Position Summary
The Emergency Services Lab Assistant supports the planning, preparation, maintenance, and safe operation of Emergency Services training labs and scenarios. Working closely with faculty and program leadership, this position ensures that instructional spaces, equipment, and materials are organized, functional, and compliant with safety standards and program objectives. The role contributes directly to high-quality, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for success in fire service, emergency medical services, and public safety careers.
Primary Responsibilities
1.
Lab Preparation, Maintenance, & Safety
* Prepare, set up, and dismantle training props, materials, and equipment for fire, rescue, and EMS labs.
* Inspect, clean, and maintain tools, apparatus, and facilities to ensure safe and functional operation.
* Test and service oxygen systems, fire-ground props, and other pressurized or specialized training equipment following established safety procedures.
* Maintain inventory, track supplies, and report repair or replacement needs.
* Operate college vehicles and hand or power tools as required for training-site setup and material transport.
2.
Instructional & Program Support
* Provide logistical and technical support to instructors during labs and simulations.
* Orient students to safety procedures and proper equipment use.
* Assist with demonstrations and lab resets between class sessions.
* Support outreach, recruitment, and community-training activities when scheduled.
* Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students to coordinate lab operations and ensure readiness.
3.

This is a Part-time Classified, 19 hour per week (47.5%) position in the Emergency Services department. Starting compensation is entry level for Group 7 on the 2025-26 Classified Wage Schedule.

Adjunct faculty must hold an advanced degree or equivalent credentials based on experience consistent with accreditation criteria of the discipline and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is searching for Lab Assistants/Tutors for Spring 2026.
Some mathematics courses are taught in large sections. Labs have been created to provide a setting for small group tutoring, testing, and monitoring weekly progress. The labs are offered to personalize the large groups and provide a comfortable atmosphere where students can ask questions and receive personal attention in their areas of difficulty.
Additionally, some mathematics courses have a co-requisite course to help remediate students who are not college ready. These have been created to provide a setting for small group tutoring, testing, monitoring weekly progress and remediation of content. These are offered to provide a comfortable atmosphere where students can ask questions and receive personal attention in their areas of difficulty.
A lab assistant is assigned to each of these courses to assist the instructor in facilitating their course one to two times a week. Job duties may include but are not limited to assisting students during class, grading, prepping material outside of class, and taking attendance.
Each lab assistant is required to tutor at least one hour per week in the tutoring center. Additionally, they must proctor one final exam and tutor two hours in the tutoring center during final exam week. Additional hours will be required for tutors who work hours in the tutoring center in addition to the required hours for the lab assistant position.
Lab assistants meet with the instructors of the course to discuss details of conducting each lab. Lab assistants will also help students understand concepts and clarify procedures and will listen to students and try to understand their difficulties.
Mathematics and statistics tutors provide tutorial assistance to students in lower-level mathematics and statistics classes (classes up to and including the first level of calculus and the first level of statistics). Tutors may occasionally help proctor exams or even substitute for a lab assistant.

Students who serve as lab assistants are eligible to apply for one hour of co-op credit for each lab taught. The work requirement for one co-op credit is 80 hours of work.

Position Summary

Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this laboratory specialist include assisting in the design and fabrication of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, testing and characterization of these detectors, and installation of these detectors in Jefferson Lab, the laboratory specialist will also be required to participate in the running of experiments at Jefferson lab and the analysis of data from the experiments
Minimum Qualifications

We are seeking highly motivated students to assist with animal husbandry and lab maintenance in the Fins and Limbs Lab, under the supervision of Dr. Sandy Kawano in the Department of Biology. Our lab studies the functional morphology and comparative biomechanics of animal locomotion, with an emphasis on fish and salamanders. Student workers must pay special attention to safety, animal welfare, detail in record keeping, and time management. Strong communication skills are a must, with the ability to communicate problems to the supervisor and other lab members. This position provides an opportunity to learn about comparative anatomy and physiology, and gain transferable skills for the workforce (e.g., data entry, literature review, problem solving, effective communication, time management). Work hours are flexible but may require some availability on weekends and university breaks.
The student will perform basic laboratory duties such as maintaining clean and safe workspaces, care for and monitor the health of research animals, conducting inventory of lab supplies, maintaining or updating lab records and protocols, and performing other related duties as needed.
Candidates who demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory duties may have the opportunity to join specific projects being completed in the lab, assist with data collection and analysis, participate in fieldwork, and assist or train other students. Some of the research projects will include collecting high-speed videos of animal locomotion, processing and analyzing micro-CT scans of muscles and bones, measuring the material properties of bones, and studying muscle function and anatomy in fishes and salamanders.
Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.

We are particularly interested in applicants with backgrounds in biology, anatomy, physiology, veterinary science, or related fields.
