Jobs in this group are typically responsible for managing and operating laboratory facilities used for research, teaching, or to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of disease. They ensure equipment maintenance, adhere to safety protocols, and support quality control. These roles are responsible for preparing and analyzing tissue samples, blood tests, and other specimens to assist in diagnosing diseases and conducting research. Our lab studies the functional morphology and comparative biomechanics of animal locomotion, with an emphasis on fish and salamanders. Student workers must pay special attention to safety, animal welfare, detail in record keeping, and time management. The University of Virginia Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics within the School of Medicine seeks to hire a Lab Specialist to work in the lab of Dr. Tian Zhang. The Zhang lab focuses on development and application of advanced mass spectrometry technologies on target identification and drug discovery in cancer biology. This position will provide technical support for projects and mentor and train laboratory personnel. The Lab Specialist will perform experiments, maintain the laboratory environment, and facilitate research progress. The research technician is expected to work independently in a supportive environment. * Perform laboratory experiments that include cell culture, mass spec sample preparation and maybe mass spec instrument maintenance. * Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, and staff. * Order supplies and equipment for the lab and maintain an organized system of operation. * Participate in weekly group meetings and assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives. * Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for mass spectrometry-based method development. * Facilitate collaborations with other laboratories. * In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. The Parichy lab (parichylab.org) is looking for part time assistants to help with routine tasks in both molecular biology and animal facilities, including solution preparation, plate pouring, sterilization, organization and inventory, and care and feeding of tropical fish (zebrafish and related species) using for developmental genetic and evolutionary studies. Though an entry level position, opportunities are also available for professional skills development and assisting with on-going research projects that include mutant screens, gene perturbation by CRISPR methods, PCR and molecular cloning, and other activities.
