University of West Georgia company history timeline

1908

Construction of the building started that year, and opened in 1908, with John Holland Melson as the first principal.

1920

In 1920 Irvine S. Ingram, who UWG's library is named after, became Melson's successor and the second principal of the A&M school.

1929

In 1929, legislation started to end all A&M Schools, and for the West Georgia region that meant only one of the three A&M Schools could become a Junior College.

1933

In 1933, when the West Georgia Junior College opened, it started with seventeen faculty members, many of which buildings were named after.

Created in 1933, The West Georgian was the College’s first newspaper.

The school's name (Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School) was changed to West Georgia College in 1933 and it became a two-year institution.

1942

Women started to take over the metalworking and machining jobs, as the men went off to war in 1942, and due to the men going off to war the College became almost an all girl’s school.

1960

President Ingram retired as President in 1960; however, during his time as both principal and president, he led the school from an A&M school through to a Senior College.

1963

The Business College started as a two-year secretarial science program, but in 1963 expanded into a Baccalaureate Business Degree program.

1969

In 1969, Coach Roger Kaiser started the first integrated Basketball team.

1971

In 1971, the Master of Business Administration was first offered.

1972

The College’s first Gay rights groups was chaired by Ara Dostourian in 1972.

Then, in 1972, the Center of Economic Education was started by Doctor Leland Gustafson.

1973

By January 1973, West Georgia received approval from the Georgia Board of Regents to create schools such as: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Graduate.

1974

By 1974, the enrollment rate started to increase and the campus had gradually calmed down, however President Pafford resigned 1974.

1980

Before 1980, Love Valley had a small duck pond, which was drained and the gazebo was built years later.

1985

She earned the college’s highest honor called the Founders Award in 1985.

1993

May 16, 1993, President Maurice Townsend died, and ended his 18 years as President.

Due to the education departments many successes, they received much needed space in 1993 when the education annex began its construction.

1995

The institution embraced the motto: “Educational excellence in a personal environment.” The Advanced Academy of Georgia opened in 1995, giving extraordinary high school students the opportunity to take actual college classes and live on campus.

1996

June 12, 1996, the College finally became a University, and that started a whole new era for the once small A&M School.

Under President Sethna’s presidency enrollment increased every year, except for dropping only in 1996 when standards of enrollment were raised.

In 1996 West Georgia College achieved its status as a State University.

1997

In 1997, the College of Business was renamed the Richards College of Business when Roy Richards Jr. gave a generous endowment to the college in honor of his father Roy Richards Sr., Southwire founder, and his mother, Alice Huffard Richards.

1998

Established in 1998, the public history program at the University of West Georgia includes an M.A. in History, with a concentration in Public History; a graduate Museum Studies Certificate in association with the Atlanta History Center; and an add-on graduate Certificate in Public History.

In 1998, the university received approval for its first doctoral program.

2002

Also, by 2002 renovation began for Adamson Hall.

2005

In September of 2005, after the devastation that Hurricane Katrina left in Louisiana, UWG opened its empty resident hall, Roberts Hall to 187 evacuees, ranging from ages 2 to 70.

In 2005, Doctor Faye McIntyre was named the Dean and Sewell Chair of Private Enterprise, and she has proved to be a true asset to the Richards College as she has continued lead the college’s growth, innovation, and positive impact.

2016

Commencing Spring of 2016, the multi-year project is guided by Center faculty and student staff.

2020
