UW-Milwaukee company history timeline

1956

In 1956, Wisconsin State College-Milwaukee merged with the University of Wisconsin–Extension's Milwaukee division (a graduate branch of the University of Wisconsin–Madison) to form the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

1957

The first commencement of the new University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee was held on June 16, 1957.

1958

On June 13, 1958, Socialist mayor Frank P. Zeidler was the first person to receive an honorary doctorate from the university.

1964

In 1964, the campus of the neighboring private women's institution, Milwaukee-Downer College, was purchased by the state to expand the UWM campus; Milwaukee-Downer College had previously merged with Lawrence College to form the present Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.

1965

In January 1965, the title provost was changed to chancellor.

1966

Faculty awarded UWM’s first doctoral degree (mathematics) in 1966.

1971

In 1971, the state legislature merged this entity with the Wisconsin State Universities to form a united University of Wisconsin System under a single board of regents.

1974

The university’s fund-raising profile grew with the establishment of the UWM Foundation in 1974.

1977

Mitchell Hall, renovated in 1977, continues to provide major classroom and office facilities.

1978

Founded by Phil Zweifel in 1978, The Windy Hill Review is the University of Wisconsin–Waukesha's student-run literary magazine.

1989

Mone joined the UWM faculty in 1989, serving for more than 15 years as the Associate Dean for Executive Education and Business Engagement.

1998

Schroeder returned to the History Department following his resignation as chancellor in 1998.

2003

On October 1, 2003, she became the first woman president at the University of Cincinnati.

2005

The UWM Real Estate Foundation is established in 2005.

In 2005, UW–Milwaukee surpassed UW–Madison in the number of Wisconsin resident students and became the university with the largest enrollment of Wisconsin residents.

2006

The UWM Research Foundation, established in 2006, has helped negotiate 54 license and option agreements and 40 patents and has supported the startup of nine faculty businesses.

2008

He joined UWM in 2008 as dean of the College of Engineering & Applied Science and a professor of mechanical engineering.

2010

In August 2010, The UWM Real Estate Foundation (est.

In 2010, UW–Milwaukee purchased its neighboring Columbia St Mary's Hospital complex.

2011

In the early 2011, UW-Milwaukee closed the land purchase for its Innovation Park in Wauwatosa.

2012

Made in Milwaukee, Shaping the World: The Campaign for UWM, launched in 2012, has raised $35 million to date.

2013

In Spring of 2013, construction begins on an $8 million building project the UWM Innovation Accelerator on Innovation Campus, funded by a grant from the Economic

2014

Mark Mone was confirmed as the ninth Chancellor of UWM in December 2014.

2015

These partnerships helped UWM earn its first community engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2015.

2018

The building will open in late 2018, bringing together in one cutting-edge structure the interdisciplinary leadership training, ideas challenges and design and product development courses that are the foundation of UWM’s thriving, student-centered entrepreneurial ecosystem.
