University of Wisconsin-Platteville history

The history of Native North America begins long before the Dawes Act of 1887.

In 1903, the first college was established in Richland Center.

James Hibbard, archivist for the Southwest Wisconsin Room at UW-Plattevile, looks over a stuffed badger shot north of Platteville in 1904 that is now part of the archives at UW-Platteville.

A $2 million restoration of the 1907 locomotive owned by the Mid-Continent Railway Museum continues in the town of Springfield.

The building is named after Fred Ullrich, who joined the faculty of the Platteville Normal School as an instructor in biological sciences in 1914, and later served as director of the agriculture school.

Ullrich Hall at UW-Platteville was built in 1916 and is the oldest building on campus.

In 1917, a third year was added to the curriculum, making the Wisconsin Mining School the first school in the United States to offer a three-year course in mining engineering, upon completion of which a student received a diploma.

One of the university's oldest traditions originated in the year 1936 when the mining school students began work on the world’s largest “M" by placing rocks in a pattern on the southwest slope of the mound, located a few miles east of the city.

It was renamed Platteville State Teachers College in 1926 and Wisconsin State College, Platteville in 1951. It changed its name to the Wisconsin Institute of Technology in 1939.

He also has the time capsule from the cornerstone of Ullsvik Hall, built in 1958.

As a result of the committee’s efforts, the cooperative graduate program was launched in 1960.

In 1961 the committee recommended that the state universities begin plans for independent graduate programs.

In the summer session of 1962, the first graduate work under the independent program was offered, modeled on the cooperative graduate program.

During the fall semester of 1964, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville began offering on-campus graduate courses in the evening and on Saturday mornings.

In 1966, along with Wisconsin's other state colleges, it was granted university status as Wisconsin State University-Platteville.

UW-Platteville Richland opened in 1967 as the Richland Branch Campus of the Wisconsin State University-Platteville.

The university and all other public institutions of higher education in Wisconsin merged in 1971 to form the UW System, governed by a single Board of Regents.

UW-Madison football coach Paul Chryst grew up on the campus where his father, George, was the football coach and the NFL’s Chicago Bears trained for 18 summers beginning in 1984.

In 1999, University of Wisconsin-Platteville first began offering master’s degrees online.

In May 2001 the first online master’s degree was awarded.

All have experienced at least 20 percent growth in enrollment since 2007, according to university data.

The increases have meant multiple upgrades including the addition of Rountree Commons, which opened in 2012 and can house 620 students.

Bridgeway Commons opened in 2013 and is home for 440 students and the campus’ all-you-care-to-eat dining facility.

On June 16, 2014, an EF2 tornado struck the UW-Platteville campus, causing $18.6 million in damage.

In October 2015, the new science building expansion project was concluded, adding state-of-the-art chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology space to the campus.

UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County celebrated its 50th year in 2018.
