1974

James House, MD, became interim chair of orthopedic surgery until the appointment of Roby Thompson Jr., MD, as professor and department chair in 1974.

1984

A Fellowship in Sports Medicine was established in 1984 with Elizabeth Arendt, MD, as the first fellow.

1988

The University and VAMC residency programs merged in 1988, and the spirit of cooperation of the faculty at the six institutions has provided a well-balanced environment for a comprehensive education in orthopedic surgery and its subspecialties.

1990

Fort Collins Orthopedic Associates became the Orthopaedic Center of the Rockies in 1990, when the practice moved to its current location on East Prospect Road in Fort Collins.

1997

The efforts to recruit a permanent chair paid off, and in 1997, Marc Swiontkowski, MD, was hired.

1999

The building included a Therapy Department with pools and a surgery center, which was expanded in 1999 with the addition of a third operating room and a 10-bed recovery center.

2005

Swiontkowski’s mission of creating a healthcare center for common orthopedic conditions came to fruition with the opening of TRIA Orthopedic Center in 2005.

2007

When Swiontkowski stepped down to devote his attention to his new role as TRIA’s CEO in 2007, the department sought a chair with a commitment to the vision set forth by Moe, Thompson, and Swiontkowski.

Of special note is the passing of Jim Horstman, MD, a partner who passed away in 2007 from cancer.

2009

In November 2009 the group’s partners changed our name to Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies, to emphasize the practice’s services for people with back and neck conditions and injuries.

2016

OCR also opened an office in Greeley in May 2016, to help serve the growing number of individuals who previously had driven to the offices in Fort Collins and Loveland for appointments.

Doctor Charles Collopy passed away in 2016.
