About the Role
The part-time PhysicalTherapist is responsible for ensuring that students are provided adequate support to find success in the school setting.
Salary: $83,750 - $105,000 annually at full-time, prorated to 0.4 FTE
Hours: 2 days/week. The days of the week are flexible and we can work to accommodate your schedule.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assess students' conditions and needs;
Collaborate with teachers, students and their families, the school nurse, learning specialists, social workers, and other members of a student's support team;
Develop and propose a plan for students with specific tasks that will help them meet their goals;
Demonstrate exercises that can help students better perform everyday tasks;
Evaluate a student's home or workplace and identify potential improvements based on their needs;
Educate a student's family about how to help care for and accommodate them;
Recommend and teach students how to use adaptive equipment that will help them with daily living, such as wheelchairs and eating aids; and
Assess patients' progress against goals and prepare reports for healthcare providers and insurance agencies.
Qualifications
A Valid Massachusetts PT license;

The employee must be able to enter data, read from screens, and review handwritten or printed materials, with or without visual aids. Clear and effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues-both in person and over the phone-is essential. Strong visual and auditory awareness is necessary to ensure student safety and provide meaningful feedback to instructional staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in this environment is usually loud with phones ringing and all therapists working the same office area. The employee interacts with other staff and occasionally must meet multiple demands from several people.

Provides physical therapy services, as identified through the IEP/504 plan, to students enrolled in the educational programs of the Canton Public Schools
Administers physical therapy assessments to determine a student's level of functioning relative to their age and educational placement in such areas as gross motor skills, balance, and strength.
Writes assessment reports identifying the student's needs and proposed treatment strategies; writes individual student goals and objectives as part of the IEP; maintains progress records; participates in the IEP meeting.
Develops physical therapy treatment plans and goals for rehabilitative care to improve student functional abilities and enhance their ability to learn.
Develops physical therapy treatment plans based on the educational goals for eligible students to improve the student's functional abilities within the school and naturalistic settings, in collaboration with the IEP team.
Monitors therapy programs and consults with educational staff regarding inclusion of appropriate physical therapy treatment strategies into the educational program; evaluates the efficacy of the established program and makes modifications within the framework of the IEP process as necessary.
Participates in meetings between Canton Public School staff and families on the appropriate implementation of programs; collaborates and coordinates physical therapy goals with the educational program.
Demonstrates educational and developmental strategies to students and families for successful home interventions
Provides interpretation and summaries of assessment reports to families; recommends appropriate activities and materials designed to support motor goals in the home.
Consults and collaborates with medical and community agencies that interact with Canton Public School staff regarding physical therapy services for students.
Adapts equipment to assure proper positioning and to enhance functional performance of the student, addressing the student's neuromuscular deficits and needs. May include design and fabrication of equipment or recommendations for purchase of adaptive equipment as needed.
Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the laws and policies governing Special Education in Massachusetts, particularly as they pertain to the delivery of physical therapy services.
Consults with other members of the educational team regarding the mandated and best practice roles of ophysical therapists.
Administers physical therapy programs as needed in terms of budget recommendations, space, and equipment recommendations.
Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Registered with the American Physical Therapy Association and/or certified with the National Board of Physical Therapy
A Master's Degree is preferred
Three years of clinical experience in pediatric therapy with emphasis on developmental disabilities and working in an educational setting. Experience in working collaboratively with teams and families is desired.
Demonstrated success in building and sustaining strong relationships with students and families and value ongoing collaboration with colleagues
Sensitivity to the needs of children and parents of different ethnic, cultural, language, educational, and economic backgrounds;
Possession of effective work strategies including flexibility, good organization skills, time management, and ability to work independently and prioritize multiple work tasks.

We are seeking a PhysicalTherapist on a temporary basis from September through December. Under the general supervision of the Education Director, you will provide physical therapy services for a population of students who are deafblind and have neurological, multiple, and severe disabilities. You will provide direct therapy to students and consultation and in-service training to members of the interdisciplinary program team. You will provide evaluation services to students referred to the school and act as liaison between medical specialists and program staff.
Responsibilities:
Provides clinical evaluation services to students referred to the School, including delivery of standardized and non-standardized assessment and development of comprehensive written reports, and acts as liaison between medical specialists and program staff as appropriate.
Reviews medical, family and educational history of the student to assess the student's functioning in order to identify abilities and areas of need; recommends appropriate therapy and develops individual therapeutic objectives for each student referred.
Develops on-going treatment plan for each student receiving physical therapy and provides direct physical therapy or supervises the delivery of physical therapy services as necessary; Recommends and orders appropriate adaptive equipment or devices and maintains equipment to assure it is in proper working condition.
Participates in program meetings, staff assignments, case reviews, and IEP or ISP meetings and prepares oral or written reports of current progress and needs of students; consults on curriculum development at the request of the program supervisor.
Develops measurable goals and objectives for future programming of individual students in writing and makes scheduling recommendations as appropriate; participates in the screening or evaluations of students referred to Perkins for recommendations or admission.
Participates as a member of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team in developing goals and objectives for current and future programming and communicates these with others to assure continuity of programming.
Maintains current student records for those involved in therapeutic treatment and prepares statistical data regarding service delivery as necessary.
Assumes responsibility for the safety and welfare of students; observe and support students in other situations or settings as needed.
Acts as a liaison between physicians and other outside providers, and Perkins program staff; and obtains pertinent medical and referral information from outside medical teams.
Accompanies students to medical appointments as necessary.
Provides supervision to physical therapy undergraduate and graduate student placements when appropriate.
Assists in recruiting and interviewing physicaltherapist applicants and other clinical service providers as requested.
Works within School and Human Resources policies and procedures; adheres to program guidelines for expenditures and maintains appropriate records.
Participates in grant and proposal writing as requested.
Attends professional conferences, seminars and courses for professional development.
Makes professional contributions, such as planning and participating in workshops, delivering presentations at conferences, and preparing articles for publication with the prior approval of the program supervisor and the clinical liaison.
Requests and monitors the ordering of materials, supplies, and equipment.

Minimum Requirements
Doctorate in Physical Therapy accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy (CAPTE), or equivalent
Experience working with students with sensory deficits in hearing, vision, multiple impairments or intellectual disabilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to complete and maintain First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Safety Care Certifications
The following shared salary range is what Perkins reasonably expects, in good faith, to pay for the position. The applicable range could differ based on experience and qualification.
