Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling is the East Coast's largest privately held scrap metal processing company, recycling approximately 1 million tons of ferrous and 250 million pounds of nonferrous per year. Headquartered in Owego, NY, Upstate Shredding was founded by Adam Weitsman in 1997. In 2005, Upstate Shredding acquired Ben Weitsman & Son, a small retail yard founded by Adam's grandfather, Ben, in 1938. The company has since grown to include 17 locations throughout New York and Pennsylvania. In 2007, Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling was named the first green plant of its type by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Upstate Shredding has also received several top industry awards, including Scrap Company of the Year by American Metal Market in 2015 and 2016 and the international Leadership Award for Scrap & Recycling from S&P Platts in 2014 and 2016.
