The Ural Heavy Machine Building Plant began operations in 1933 in compliance with the plans of the Government of the USSR for the industrialization of the country.

Uralmash produced the last self-propelled gun SU-100 in 1946.

In 2005, Gazprom purchased a controlling stake in OMZ and Uralmash.
