Job Summary: We are seeking a dependable and skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair the machinery that powers industrial residuals operations. This hands-on role focuses on diagnosing, troubleshooting, and servicing heavy equipment-ensuring safe, efficient, and uninterrupted yard operations.
Key Responsibilities
Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy equipment, including Terragators, tractors, pumps and slurry buggies.
Perform preventative maintenance (oil changes, fluid checks, lubrication, filter replacement) to minimize downtime.
Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and manuals.
Weld, fabricate, or modify parts as needed to extend equipment life.
Keep detailed service records, parts inventories, and maintenance schedules.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and yard environment.
Adhere to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
Collaborate with operators and supervisors to prioritize repairs and plan equipment servicing
Minimum Qualifications
Required Experience:
3+ years as a heavy equipment mechanic or similar role.
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrains.
Technical Skills: Ability to read schematics, use diagnostic equipment, and perform welding/fabrication.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50+ lbs., work outdoors in various weather conditions, and stand or bend for long periods.
Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills.

Job Requirements
* High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
* Three (3) years' experience in helicopter airframe and power plant maintenance on helicopters.
* Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Reporting to the Power Plant Maintenance Supervisor, the Power Plant Mechanic performs specialized maintenance duties involving welding, high pressure/high temperature steam, and water lines. JOB PURPOSE:
Seeking a reliable and detail-oriented mechanic to join our fleet maintenance team. The ideal candidate will be skilled in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining various types of vehicles or machinery. You will play a vital role in ensuring operational readiness and safety through regular inspections, repairs, and performance checks.
This position is designated as emergency essential that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City, before, during or after any weather event or other conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical issues on vehicles or equipment.
Performs routine maintenance services such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake checks.
Use diagnostic tools and technical manuals to troubleshoot and resolve faults.
Replace or repair worn-out parts, including belts, hoses and filters.
Maintain repair logs and complete work orders.
Test vehicles or machinery after repairs to ensure proper performance.
Follow safety protocols and ensure work is done according to industry standards.
Stay updated on evolving automotive or machinery technologies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills.
Ability to use specialized tools, diagnostic equipment, and repair software.
Good understanding of vehicle or machinery systems and components.
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
Physical stamina and the ability to work in varying environments.
Good communication and record-keeping skills.
High school diploma or GED.
Completion of a vocational or technical training program in automotive or mechanical repair preferred.
2+ years of experience as mechanic or in a similar roll.
Certification (e.g., ASE) preferred but not required.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MECHANIC
As a Mechanic, you spend your day troubleshooting electrical systems on vehicles and performs required repairs. Your work typically involves repairing, adjusting brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems. Your job is essential to the city, and you perform ignition checks and charging systems for proper operation. You are constantly on your toes and ready for any new and unexpected challenges that may arise in the city. This can include maintaining records of services, time, and materials used in repairs of all city vehicles. When you are not out in the city, you generally maintain all vehicles in satisfactory condition to meet state inspection requirements, inventory of equipment, supplies/parts, and provides support equipment. You also ensure to provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment and vehicles as needed. You enjoy being helpful and have no problem providing assistance and support to other divisions within the department as needed. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A MECHANIC
High school diploma, GED or equivalency or Technical School Graduate with emphasis on automotive, diesel mechanics and/or automotive electrical systems.
Preferred: Technical School Graduate with emphasis on automotive, diesel mechanics and/or automotive electrical systems. ASE Certified
Three (3) years of experience in vehicle and engine maintenance and repair.
Preferred: Five (5) years' experience in vehicle and engine maintenance and repair
Must have a current and valid class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record and insurable by the City's current insurance carrier.
