Us Navy company history timeline

1812

The War of 1812 grew out of British impressment of United States seamen and other grievances.

After achieving such success during the War of 1812, Congress encouraged the expansion of the naval fleet and bestowed upon the United States Navy responsibility for protecting burgeoning overseas commerce.

1836

The Boston Naval Hospital opened in 1836 as one of the first three hospitals authorized specifically for naval personnel.

1845

The Naval Academy was established at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1845 by George Bancroft, then secretary of the navy.

1850

In 1850, it became known as the United States Naval Academy.

1853

On July 8, 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry sailed into Tokyo Bay, effectively ending centuries of Japanese isolation from the West and paving the way for the Treaty of Kanagawa, which Perry concluded the following year.

1861

When the American Civil War began in 1861, the United States Navy had about 10,000 officers and men and 90 ships.

Following the start of the Civil War in 1861, few expected naval warfare to constitute an important part of the national conflict.

1864

The sinking of the Union sloop Housatonic by the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley (February 17, 1864) demonstrated the viability of a submersible as a naval weapon.

1865

When the Civil War ended in a Union victory in 1865, the United States possessed a total of 671 ships making it the largest navy in the world.

1891

The Navy adopted this punishment in its early days from the British Royal Navy and continued using it long after the Royal Navy stopped using it in 1891.

1898

While floating in Havana Harbor in 1898 to protect American citizens in Cuba, one of the new battleships, the USS Maine, mysteriously blew up killing all 250 crew members and spawning the Spanish-American War.

1944

D-Day Landings – 1944 On June 6, 1944, some 175 members of Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDUs)— predecessors of the Navy SEALS–were among the first invading forces to arrive on the beaches of Normandy.

1945

More than 72 years after it sank in July 1945, the final resting place of USS Indianapolis has been discovered in the Pacific Ocean.

1980

In May 1980, Elizabeth Anne Rowe became the first woman member of the class to graduate.

In 2019, the United States Navy stopped allowing officers to punish sailors by limiting their meals to bread and water.
