The Opportunity
USAA is seeking a talented Director, Decision Science Analytics to lead a team within the Life Company Data and Analytics Team. The Life Company Data and Analytics Team develops exciting and innovative Analytics, Data, Reporting, and Artificial Intelligence capabilities in support of the USAA Life Company strategy. This people leader role will lead a team of analysts responsible for Analytics, Reporting, Dashboarding and Data Ad hoc for the Annuity and Health lines of business. This leader will work closely with our Life Company and other USAA business partners to develop forward-thinking and art-of-the-possible solutions to meet our member and business needs. Additionally, this people leader will ensure that the team continuously advances their data acumen and analytical skills for the future.

What you'll do:
As a strategic partner, leads or collaborates with other analytical leaders in executing the strategic direction of the business using mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative/quantitative analytical approaches.
Develops team reputation as highly skilled experts in decision science support.

Monitors, understands, and adopts emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions.
Identifies additional resource needs ranging from IT investments, 3rd party support or additional analysts and provides business rationale and justification for additional needs.
Understands the business direction, environment, and strategies, to set the analytic direction and builds strategy to execute the approach that will influence business and drive change.
Leads the effort and/or partners with enterprise analytics teams to build USAA core analytics capabilities and processes.
Builds and leads all aspects of a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
Assigns and or Serves as a mentor for mathematical skills and statistical techniques and guides teams to use the appropriate approaches, to drive fact-based decision-making.
Maintains and innovates knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

Works with IT/CTO partners to advance new data and platforms that correspond to evolving skill sets.

**Salary Range Information**

How you will create an impact
Are you interested in handling some of the largest and most complex Casualty claims in the industry? Your deep technical claims expertise will be put to the test in the investigation, evaluation and disposition of new and existing 3rd party property and casualty claims. These multimillion-dollar claims include multi-vehicle auto accidents, plant explosions, catastrophic product liability claims and other complex losses. You will be required to review coverage under Excess Commercial General liability and auto policies and participate in the investigation of the claim. You will direct the litigation, attend mediations and trials, assess liability and damages, and recommend reserves. It will be necessary to present the large value cases to senior management. You will need excellent customer service skills in communicating with insureds, brokers, attorneys, and claimants. Only the most highly skilled negotiators will succeed in resolving these claims in the toughest venues against the most elite plaintiff attorneys.
* Determining the scope and extent of available coverage.
* The investigation, evaluation and disposition of new and existing 3rd party property and casualty claims.
* Preparation and execution of investigation strategies which identify critical issues effecting liability, causation and damages and assess risk transfer and contribution opportunities.
* Clear and concise communication and contact with internal and external customers, including insureds, brokers and underwriters, to provide guidance and manage expectations.
* Proper documentation of exposure evaluation and resolution strategy.
* Presentation to senior management of claim disposition recommendations.
* Obtain the appropriate authority to independently negotiate multimillion-dollar claims with the top plaintiff attorneys nationwide. Document evaluation, thought process, and strategy. Utilize ADR as appropriate and necessary.
* Effectively strategize and budget litigation of each claim through discussions with counsel, vendors, and insureds. Establish with defense and coverage counsel clear ground rules to maintain financial control of budget and expenses.
What you will need to succeed
* 8+ years of Commercial/Industry claims experience preferred.
* Excellent communication ability (verbal/written) and strong negotiation skills.
* Advanced experience and capabilities in litigation claims management including ADR and mediation process.
* Experience attending and controlling claims - pre-suit, litigated and post-trial - at mediations, settlement conferences, etc.
