UX Researcher
Retool Inc. 4.2
User experience researcher job in San Francisco, CA
Intro
Nearly every company in the world runs on custom software for critical operations like tracking performance metrics, handling customer support workflows, building admin dashboards, and countless other processes you might not have even thought of. But most companies don't have adequate resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old and clunky internal software or, even worse, users still stuck in manual and spreadsheet flows.
At Retool, we're building the first enterprise AppGen platform: software that transforms natural language into production-ready code, integrates directly with business data, and meets the highest standards of security and governance. AI is redefining what it means to build software-and who gets to build it. The definition of “developer” now includes analysts, operators, and domain experts creating solutions directly. As the pool of builders widens, so does the complexity of what they need to build. The opportunity is enormous, but so is the challenge of enabling this larger community to build production‑grade software safely. That means AI that understands real business data, enforces enterprise policies automatically, and empowers teams to create once and reuse everywhere with shared, trusted components.
Over 100 million hours of work has been automated by developers and domain experts using our platform, freeing them to focus on creative problem-solving and strategic initiatives that drive real business value. The people closest to knowing what needs to be built can now safely create custom solutions within enterprise guardrails. And that's a mission worth striving for.
Let's build the future together!
Why We're Looking For You
We're looking for a UX Researcher to inform our product and design strategy through one of tech's most transformative shifts: the fusion of developer tools and AI. At Retool, we're reimagining how software gets built in the era of AI, and your research will light the way.
You'll be a foundational member on a small, strategic research team, with an opportunity to shape the culture of research at Retool and define how insights drive impact across the organization. Though a new function, research is already deeply valued across the organization, informing key strategic designs and guiding our expansion into new customer segments and AI‑powered experiences. You'll collaborate with a curious and customer‑centric group of designers, engineers, and product managers who are eager to partner with research to uncover new opportunities to elevate our products.
What You'll Do
Work with stakeholders to identify knowledge gaps, latent assumptions, and open questions to prioritize opportunities for impactful research.
Plan, conduct, and analyze studies leveraging a range of qualitative and quantitative methods-from tactical usability tests to in‑product surveys and more-to generate actionable learnings.
Balance speed with research rigor, creatively leveraging research methods to work within constraints.
Triangulate insights from across userresearch, product usage, support, and market signals, to surface meaningful patterns.
Distill complex data into clear, compelling stories for teams across the org, from product, design, and engineering peers to executive stakeholders.
As an early member of the research team, you'll also collaborate with your teammates to shape our research practice, evolve our processes, and help embed user‑centered thinking across everything we do.
Skillset You'll Bring
4+ years of experience in UX research, product research, or a related field, ideally in B2B or technical product environments.
Proven ability to own research projects end‑to‑end, from scoping through to execution and analysis, leveraging a range of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Strong synthesis and storytelling skills, with an ability to distill ambiguity into clarity and make insights resonate with diverse audiences.
Experience shaping product direction through early‑stage generative research and iterative usability testing.
Comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces and a bias toward action-you're as strategic as you are scrappy.
Deep curiosity about how complex systems work, especially technical workflows or developer tools.
Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with an understanding for how to bring others into the process and rally teams around user insights.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, scope projects appropriately, and deliver high‑quality work on time.
Additional Nice‑to‑Haves
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Human‑Computer Interaction, Psychology, Human Factors, Computer Science, or similar field.
Experience working on AI products, along with an understanding of how these technologies work and implications for how users interact with them.
Familiarity with design thinking frameworks, usability evaluation techniques, and A/B testing.
A portfolio of work that demonstrates the ability to drive measurable business impact by informing product and design decisions.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $164,890 - $223,190 USD (base salary). Additional compensation includes equity, commission/bonuses, and a comprehensive benefit plan including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). Retool offers generous benefits to all employees and hybrid work location. Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation or benefit plans.

**The work you'll do is...**
**Human-led**
People/customers should be at the center of our approach. Partner with customers and experts to deeply understand their objectives and needs. Envision what might make their workflows and experiences spectacularly better. Conduct exploratory and evaluative sessions to identify critical needs and goals, then refine workflow, UI, and even product strategy.
**Superb craftmanship**
You will be designing solutions from concept, wireframes, and prototypes to detailed, visually polished and scalable experiences, ready for implementation. Incorporate feedback quickly and adapt to changes in business requirements and timelines without compromising quality. Leverage the existing design style guide and system, templates, and components in order to deliver quality on time. Define the new patterns needed for the future. Own and drive the experience of our products - and witness the impact that your work will have on our customers.
**Bold, aspirational, exciting**
We create solutions that span not just the depth and breadth of the challenges our customers face, but come from our diverse employee base, which is core to our DNA. A modern userexperience is not modern if it's one-size-fits-all.
You will work closely with kind, curious and smart designers, researchers, writers, product managers, and engineers across the globe. We believe innovation starts with inclusion - everyone's voice is heard and valued.

**You're a full stack userexperience designer.** You look at strategy and the product ecosystem, multiple interacting user roles, workflow and information architecture, interaction and visual design, and more. You may be better at some than others, but you know how to talk about each and combine them all into an experience that delights **.** You can show big design and strategy contributions to new products in your past work.
**Your collaborations make teams design-led.** You make the people around you better. You have a point of view based on user-centered logic and evidence. You communicate clearly and persuasively to set the direction of whole interdisciplinary teams and build alignment among leaders. You are a model to early-career designers and share your skills and tools.
**You get stuff done.**
**You love rules and you know when to break them.** You think systemically even beyond your product because creating a coherent experience requires it. But you know when the system needs to expand and when to do something unique to create an arresting and product-defining moment that makes users ooh and aah.
**You don't already know everything and you love to learn.** You're inspired by helping users solve their problems. You love finding out you're wrong. You consume large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data to constantly refine your assumptions.
**And finally, you want to be part of creating spectacular and impactful change at a company that is committed to becoming a light unto others when it comes to userexperience design.** You might have learned your craft via formal training or via on-the-job training. For most candidates, it's a combination of both. As long as you've got experience and passion doing this work at the highest level, we'd love to talk to you and see a portfolio of the work you're most proud of.
