1950

1960

1961

UCM purchased the Suntrana Mining Co. in 1961, (whose Doodlebug is seen here), which was later converted to a man haul. (15-009 UCM Archive)

1962

UCM has conducted surface mining operations exclusively since 1962.

1967

1971

In 1971, UCM purchased the neighboring Vitro Mine and became the sole producing coal mine in Alaska.

In 1971, six years before it was required by federal law, the Usibelli family pioneered a successful reclamation program with the ultimate goal of establishing a natural landscape on previously mined land.

1977

Purchased during 1977, it was brought to Alaska on 26 railroad cars and 40 trucks.

In 1977, the mine acquired the "Ace-in-the-Hole" dragline, Alaska's largest land-mobile machine.

1985

Since 1985, UCM has provided more than 15 million tons of coal to South Korea.

1987

2002

The dragline started the journey from Poker Flats on 18 November 2002 and arrived at Two Bull Ridge Mine five days later on 22 November 2002.

2008

Since 2008, UCM has shipped more than 1 million tons of ultra-low sulfur coal to Japan.
