USO company history timeline

1941

The United Service Organizations, popularly known as the USO, was incorporated in New York on February 4, 1941, to provide recreational opportunities and resources for members of the United States armed forces on leave.

1942

Dewey resigned to become governor of New York, and the chairmanship of the USO passed to Prescott Bush in 1942.

1947

The USO was disbanded in 1947, then reorganized during the Korean War and expanded considerably during the Vietnam War.

1948

Then, in January 1948, the USO's president announced that the group had fulfilled its mission and was now disbanded.

1949

Only six months later, Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, worried about the growing Cold War with the Soviet Union, inquired about reinstating the USO. Members of the six founding organizations met again, and in January 1949 the USO was reconstructed.

1951

1951: USO is reactivated to serve troops in Korea.

1958

In 1958 he donated $5 million for the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.

1973

After the United States withdrew from Vietnam in 1973, the USO found itself again lacking funding.

1989

In the Philippines in 1989, threats against the American military forced commanders to confine all personnel to their bases.

2000

By 2000, the USO was bringing in just over $8 million in annual funds.
