Valders Cooperative company history timeline

1840

Valders, a progressive community, can trace its name and heritage to Norwegian immigrants who settled in Manitowoc County in the 1840's.

1853

The first church (octagonal shaped) was built in 1853, but before its location could be decided, there was a controversy which needed to be settled.

1890

About 1890, Wisconsin Central Railroad decided to establish railroad service to the small towns between Manitowoc and Hilbert.

1894

The right-of-way was purchased and construction began in 1894.

1898

In 1898, the first house was built by Mr.

1907

In 1907 Christel and Luellof Grocery Store opened.

1908

In 1908, Oslo Light & Power Co. began to supply electricity to Valders.

1917

Tony Gintner opened a bar, ice cream parlor and two bowling lanes in 1917.

1919

Valders was incorporated as a village in late 1919, and the first election was held on Jan.

1922

A four year high school was established after a two stroy brick building on Jefferson Street was completed in 1922.

1945

Henry Binversie and Melvin Lutzke recruited farmers and, with the help of Manitowoc County Agent Truman Torgerson, had over eighty people pledged to form a cooperative by the end of 1945.

1946

On July 17, 1946, the first Board of Directors' meeting of the Lake to Lake Dairy Cooperative convened.

1949

Construction began immediately on a new cheese processing plant in Kiel, Wisconsin, which was completed in 1949.

1950

In this same year, the Cooperative also purchased a milk processing plant in Denmark, Wisconsin, and in the following year (1950) opened a new receiving plant in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
