Valentino company history timeline

1960

In 1960 Valentino met Giancarlo Giametti, an architecture student, who became his partner in charge of the commercial side of the business.

1961

1962

Valentino and Giammetti quickly became partners both romantically and professionally, and together they developed Valentino SpA into an internationally recognized brand that launched in 1962 at the Pitti Palace in Florence.

With the help of Giametti, budding fashion icon Valentino Garavani made his international debut in 1962 – his first couture show held at Pitti Palace in Florence.

1968

In 1968, Valentino released his all-white collection that featured the ‘V’ logo which is now synonymous with the brand.

1969

In 1969 he opened his first ready-to-wear shop in Milan.

1978

The brand released its first scent in 1978, called ‘Valentino Classique for Women’.

1979

In 1979 Valentino’s logo changed, and it is the same until this day.

1981

1990

In 1990, Valentino established the “Academia Valentino” a cultural spot in Rome, opened for art exhibitions.

1991

In 1991, Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti created L.I.F.E, an organization to support AIDs patients, encourage by Elizabeth Taylor.

1998

He and Giametti sold the company in 1998, though Valentino remained the designer.

1999

Valentino’s first men’s cologne wouldn’t follow until 1999 when they released ‘Very Valentino for Men’.

2002

HdP sold the brand in 2002 to Marzotto Apparel for $210 million, when the brand was producing revenue of $180 million.

2006

Valentino Garavani received the French ‘Legion of Honour’ medal in 2006 for his dedication to the fashion industry.

2012

In 2012, Qatar purchased the brand for 700 million euros through an investment company called ‘Mayhoola for Investments S.P.C’.

The couturier rarely designs commissioned gowns, but made an exception in 2012 to create a custom bridal dress for actress Anne Hathaway, whom he considers a daughter.

2016

After her departure, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli became joint Creative Directors, with Chirui departing in 2016 to make Piccioli the sole Creative Director.

Under Picciol’s leadership, the brand has undergone a fundamental change since 2016, blending modernity and beauty with innovative designs.
