GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
* The PhysicianAssistant provides care of the critically ill neonate in the neonatal ICU and SCN
setting, including attendance at high-risk deliveries with the NICU team, admission of the ill
neonate to both the level II and III setting, and medical management of the critically ill neonate in
the NICU/SCN setting.
* The PhysicianAssistant shall work with a multidisciplinary team to review history and daily patient
data, round with a multidisciplinary team to make management plans and carry forth these plans
through the off hours.
* The PhysicianAssistant will perform emergency procedures including but not limited to
endotracheal intubation, needle thoracentesis, thoracostomy, paracentesis, umbilical line
placement, PICC line placement, peripheral arterial access, lumbar puncture, bladder catheterization.
* The physicianassistant works under the supervision of an attending physician and reports
directly to the department administrator or chief physicianassistant administratively.
* The PA will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies
including but not limited to the BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved
clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy.

SUMMARY
The APC Collaborative Teaching Pod is a unique and innovative opportunity for learning value-based primary care. The incumbent will work with three-four advanced practice clinicians who are either new graduates or new to primary care. This team or ?pod? will work together to co-manage a panel of patients, supported by a supervising physician and a designated MD or APC preceptor for each session. Didactic sessions will occur twice a month along with opportunities to learn from colleagues in medical specialties. The teaching pod is a one-year commitment with the potential for job placement within Atrius Health or Reliant Medical Group after successful completion of the program. Placement in a permanent position will depend on hiring needs within the respective organizations at that time.
The incumbent is a certified nurse practitioner (NP) who possesses advanced training/skills in assessing, diagnosing, and treating the patient with both chronic and acute illness and disease. Works in a collaborative team practice that recognizes the patient as the central focus. Serves as a patient educator in areas of specialization.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Diagnoses and treats acute and chronic illnesses that are of an appropriate level of complexity for the knowledge and experience of the NP.
Orders and interprets laboratory work and other diagnostic studies. Develops and implements a plan of care to address the illness, which may include prescribing medications and/or other treatments. May refer patient to subspecialty physicians.
Teaches and counsels individuals and groups regarding specific health care needs. Serves as an educator in areas of specialization (e.g. family planning, weight loss, smoking cessation).
May serve as the representative care provider for a patient with a stated preference or as appropriate to the practitioner?s area of specialization. Develops and implements a comprehensive plan of care for these patients, taking into account social, emotional, and developmental needs, as well as all current medical management practices.
Communicates issues related to patient care with PCP. Collaborates with PCP in provision of patient care.
Participates in department and organizational clinical care initiatives.
Maintains BLS certification.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Graduate of a State-approved school of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Master of Science degree and Nurse Practitioner certification in an area of specialty required. Possess a current license to practice as a professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and authorization to practice in the expanded role. Possession and maintenance of or eligibility for DEA and Mass DPH Controlled Substances Registration. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty.
EXPERIENCE
This position is intended for Nurse Practitioners without/with limited prior Primary Care experience.

This position will weekend rotation coverage.

NP Qualifications:
Authorization to practice in an expanded role as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners
Minimum of 24 contact hours beyond generic education in pharmacotherapeutics
Masters degree in Nursing
Minimum of 1 year oncology nursing experience or 1 year Nurse Practitioner experience
Oncology Nurse Practitioner experience preferred
In possession of Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Federal DEA numbers
Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred - OCN, AOCN, CPON, BMTCN, CPHON
Terms and Conditions of employment for Nurse Practitioners at Dana-Farber are governed by a collective bargaining unit through the Massachusetts Nurses Association at our Longwood, Chestnut Hill, and Merrimack Valley locations.
PA Qualifications:
A Masters Degree and successful completion of an AAPA/NCCPA accredited PhysicianAssistant Studies program are required. Must be NCCPA Certified and licensed to practice as a PhysicianAssistant in Massachusetts. Must maintain current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses, and complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each 2 year period of employment.
PA I: No professional experience required.
PA II: 2 years of qualifying professional PhysicianAssistant experience
PA III: 5 years of qualifying professional PhysicianAssistant experience
